I know I'm a newbie of 3 weeks so I might be paranoid but last night was the first time I have taken the truck anywhere that I had to park it and could not see it.
We went to dinner and I got up 4 times during dinner and went outside to make sure no one was messing with my truck and to make sure it was still there.
My question is how do I keep it from being stolen?
On the key fob if I hit the button 2 times the horn beeps and the lights flash.
I assume this is an alarm is it any good ?
I would like to know what other people are doing to give them peace of mind.
I'm glad I have a garage because If I had to park my truck outside I would not get any sleep.
Glad you love your truck as much as most of us-but the sad fact in todays lifestyle is that theft happens. Park it in a well lighted area whenever youre out and about-always lock it securely-garage it at all times(plus lock it while IN the garage)-buy good, full replacement value insurance-pray a lot! The alarm system is what it is-it flashes and sounds the horn but with so many of those things going off today, often no one pays much attention.

My SSR is parked outside all the time. Yes when you hit the button twice and the horn honks that sets the alarm. It works well but only as long as you are in ear shot of it because nobody else is going to care.

I truly feel alarms are a total waste of money and would not confront a person trying to steal or vandalize my rides......(I would love to break their arms & legs)
There are systems out there that page & have a tracker if the ride is stolen or tampered with. I'm still looking for one.

Try LO-JACK .Thats what I have . If your SSR gets stolen They can find it faster with this system. The faster they find it the less damage.

Horn honks so long as you haven't changed the setting in the DIC. Mines set not to honk..

The only problem with Lo Jack is that it does not notify you that it has been stolen and there are surprisingly many areas without coverage. Since you live in So Cal you're covered in alot of places but if you go north (or your truck goes north) your out of luck.

See if you can get the doctor to request that you get a handicap place card so that you can park closer to the doors plus you'll get a slightly larger parking space.
Works for me.
The factory alarm can easily be defeated. there are even videos on the internet on how to defeat virtually any factory alarm in about 20 seconds.
I know of an SSR owner who had his truck stolen from his driveway at his house. Apparently someone followed him home and "captured" the factory remote code with an electronic code scanning device when he pressed his key fob to lock the truck. Later they came by, unlocked the truck with their scanner, hot wired it, and drove it off. The truck was never found.
Get an aftermarket alarm with "code hopping" capability. The signal between the remote and the truck changes every time it is used. This makes it a little more difficult to defeat the system electronically. Also, get one with a pager, so if you can't see the truck, the remote will alarm or vibrate, letting you know on the display if the truck has been hit, door or hood opened, etc. Viper is a good system, for example. You should be able to find a higher end stereo shop to install it. There are several similar alarm kits with features like the Viper system.
LoJack has a new version of their system that will page your cell phone when the vehicle moves without your key, and automatically phones the police. At least with LoJack, the truck can be located with GPS by the police, so you can eventually track it down if it is stolen. Higher end vehicles like the SSR are often stolen and then parked on some back street to "cool off", to see if the vehicle is equipped with LoJack. If it's not picked up within 2 or 3 days, the thieves come back and take it. If it is equipped with LoJack, the vehicle is picked up by the police, usually within 24 hours, and the thieves lose out, but don't get caught, either.
I would suspect that the SSR is not a vehicle that is typically stolen for parts and chopped, like say Hondas. It might be broken into to remove stereos and such. If that's all you're worried about, the factory alarm protects against vandalism almost as much as the aftermarket units, just by being a deterrent with the horn and lights. If you are actually worried about the truck being stolen, though, I would recommend an upgrade, and if you're in a good coverage area, LoJack.
You can also get a discount from some insurance companies if you have an aftermarket alarm installed, as well as LoJack. I know AAA gave me separate discounts for both.
If you get an alarm with a remote start capability, you can even kill the engine from the remote after you get a signal that it has started. It will then be impossible to start again without the key.
Of course, just about any system can be defeated. But, why not invest a little money in an upgraded security system, if you know the factory system is really not much of a theft deterrent? Especially if you can recoup the money through savings on your insurance?

Lojack will also call you when this happens.
LoJack works up in the Bay Area (San Jose, San Francisco, etc), but not on the central coast, (Monterey, Santa Cruz), and some other areas. You'll have to call LoJack to find out if your area is covered.
Lo Jack will not go as far north as Prescott and Tucson is as far south as it can get. Don't know the boundaries for east and west. We had a piece of equipment that was stolen and found 3 weeks later in Prescott. Lo-Jack couldn't pick it up. Very limited range for us in the valley.

I feel your pain, Delma Lou
Whenever I need to leave DOOPHUS unattended, I am not comfortable.
A few months ago while having my garage (more of a bedroom for DOOPHUS and BUMMER) painted and floor tiled, I was literally up all night checking on their safety.
As for the alarm . . . whenever there is a "foolproof" system, there is another fool trying to beat that system.
So sad our current situation forces us to feel this way but . . .
I have the Hornet in mine. It gives me about 1000' , 2 way beeping remote with a video type screen and a remote starter.
If someone bangs on the truck or opens the doors or bed it beeps me and shows me what is being tampered with. Also it shows me that it is running under the remote starter.
Frank I have a guy who would install it where you live. send me an IM.
Let me know if you want further details or model #
