Help! My mechanic changed 3 altenators and 3 batterries, checked all ground wires he could see. It still puts out 14.5 at idle and the trunk smells from the battery cooking!! Any help out there? Richard

You are going thur the same thing I am with my 2002 Silverado....
Difference the Silverado it's a dual battery system
Today we replaced both batteries with new ones.....the truck still dies freqently! Died three times on the way home today to.
One battery cooked and the other we just returned it boiled over. Smelling battery acid too!!
Out of warranty.....tired of trying to figure it out so it's going in to my dealership this Friday. Good thing after putting in two new batteries and doing the global reset.....it finally threw a code which it hasn't done previously.
I have been told that it could be the ignition switch too.
I also have seen the cigarette lighter stuck in the socket; a kid had held it down and it welded its self in place. This caused an over charge and ruined 2 alternators and one Battery before I found this perpetual current drain on the system.

The best way to find your problem is to remove accessory Fuses one at a time and recheck the output on the Alternator at every fuse removal. Replace fuses as you go. Doing this will isolate the circuit that is causing the problem. When you find the bad circuit, troubleshoot everything connected to that circuit one at a time. It could be just a wire that has rubbed against something sharp enough to remove the dielectric (insulation) from the wire(s)

moodyblue I,m going to try what you said over the weekend! Thanks!!!!
Also check in the Roof Storage area as this is an area that a lot of people are having problems with wire harneses coming loose from their anchors and rubbing them selves bare.
