I drove the R into work this morning since the Mrs.( RedCat) is taking my SRX on a little trip today. I had not driven it in a couple of months and notice a distinct alternator whine through the speakers even with the radio turned off. Could this be over compensation of the charging sytem creating excessive noise, a bad electronic filter etc.?????? I don't remember hearing it in this truck before and it struck me as out of place. The R is a 2006 with 2900 miles, it is probably punishing me for not driving it more often but it has been so nasty hot down here for the last 8 weeks I thought I would give it a break. Any advice out there?

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Noise suppression in my R is excellent. But normally these noises come from the Ignition System. I would check for loose wires, Hot or Ground in the Engine Compartment. Corrosion on a Ground is normally the Culprit.
Check around the Ignition Coils for any loose connections or wire rubbing.

Greg.....
I have noticed that my radio has some "electrical static" in it--almost like spark plug noise of the old days but very fast. I don't hear it at idle or low RPM's but do when driving down the road...above approximately 1400 RPM's.
My reception is so pathetic that I just don't listen to the radio that much. I guess I had thought that I would do something to enhance reception and deal with the static issue at that time.

Thank you Moody and others for your thoughtfull and timely response, and thanks to the rest of you for your smart azzed remarks which though not helpful, were at least enjoyable to read and showed such depth and concern, I was truly moved. I will remember you when you post a transmission problem Now I am off to drive home with the radio up and the top down hoping to put a full charge on that battery!!

Greg,
i do not have a schmatic and I am in Seattle so I do not even have the
to check but I believe that the control head feeds an amp that is always on and if the shield between get flaky you could be picking up some altenator whine. Last time I had a problem with a radio in a GM vehicle the dealer told me "we do not work on radios, only the mechanical parts of the vehicle" so I would suggest you stop by a Me & Ed's or the like and see what they have to say. Might just be a loose plug.

If you do what you've always done,
You'll get what you've always gotten.

Chances are you have a bad connection either at the Windshield or at the Radio. A lose Antena wire will pick up static.

You are welcome and I hope that it's just a loose wire or bad Ground.
I've noticed the same irritating whine in my 06. However, it's not consistent. Some days it's more noticeable than others. In fact, today I didn't notice it at all. I'll pay close attention and try to confirm under what conditions it appears.
Now see what you've done? I'll be listening to the "whine" instead of the the engine/mufflers. Oh well.
I have an 06 SSR which from day one had an electrical whine noise that varied with the engine RPMs when the HVAC blower motor speed settings were on 1 or 2. You would hear the whine in the speakers with radio on or off.
I was told it was "normal" since the three other 06 SSRs on the sales lot did the same thing. Don't you just love it when you define what's normal by other broken things....
My HVAC blower motor was getting noisy (bearing noise) so I replaced the HVAC blower motor and the electrical whine that was "normal" was gone. I guess I should take my 06 SSR in now because it's "not normal" any more and get it fixed....
Here is a link to the thread where I discuss my HVAC blower motor replacement.
Greg, does your noise only occur with the HVAC blower motor on like my former electrical whine noise?

Someone suggested a little Cheese may help. I think it works good as an attenuator. If of course you shape it to fit in your ears.

Test a little
Check to see if the whine changes with the headlights or with the parking lights. Root causes of alternator whine in the radio are usually associated with a bad ground somewhere. It could be between the engine and the frame, engine and body or body and radio. If the whine chages with the headlight draw, there may be a bad ground between the alternator and the frame.
The systems in cars usually use the ground as a shunt for the noise. When the ground gets a little flaky, it will not allow the noise to be dumped as easily and it will start showing up in the audio system.
Did you wash the truck recently? Drive through puddles? Do some work under the hood? Something changed or got corroded........
Makes transmission work seem easy in comparison, doesn't it Greg?
Jim G
Yes it does Jim. Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions and leads everyone. I will be checking it over this weekend. I may add an extra ground or two along the way, it couldn't hurt. The truck has a Corsa exhaust and K&N cold air kit but is otherwise stock. I will sniff around and make sure something was not knocked or left loose. Thanks again everyone!
