ANOTHER (wildly) incorrect dyno chart!
Buddy White sent me the dyno chart he was given by a dyno shop, which purported to show his "stock" power and torque compared to power and torque after replacing his stock air filter ELEMENT (element only, NOT an "air intake kit") with an AirAid filtert element.
First problem I saw was that the chart showed peak stock power of about 258 hp. Buddy's SSR is an 05 model, so its rwhp should have been in the 300s on a correctly calibrated dyno, with a trained operator, regardless of what "standard" was used for power correction. The possible conclusions are that
(a) Buddy got a bad engine (pretty unlikely that it would make only 258 hp and Buddy not be aware there is a problem)
(b) The dyno operator doesn't know what he is doing (more likely. Didn't it even occur to the dyno operator that a 390 hp SAEJ1349 engine should deliver more than 258 hp to the wheels??)
The second problem was that the simple replacement of the air filter ELEMENT supposedly added an extra 13 hp! The only way THAT can happen is if the original element was either VERY dirty or had gotten wet at some point (high pressure dealer car wash, hose accidentally aimed into air intek during a hand wash, etc). Because the stock filter element is paper, that can happen!
Regardless, Buddy's "results" show you that your neighborhood dyno operator is not necessarily the technical wizard you might assume he is.
