Anyone Storing Their SSr for the Winter ??

I could never drive this awesome vehicle on the snow and salt covered roads of Michigan.

Anyone know what things to do for winter garage storage?

I know the owners manual mentions disconnecting the battery but I didn't see any other recommendations.

Red face I would certainly

consider putting in some of that fuel additive that will prevent formation of gum and other harmful deposits. I almost ruined a Volkswagen while living in Alaska because I did not do that.

Winter Storage

Mine is stored. I do not disconnect the battery. I frequenly start it thru out the winter and let it run approx 20 mins or until temp reaches running temp. I use stabliizer in the gas tank. Car sits on a used piece of carpet and covered. Had no problems with it at all last year. Change the oil before taking her out in spring.

had2hvt what part of MI are you in? Why aren't you joining us for the Cider Mill Run?

As long as a vehicle can get "exercised" once every few weeks, there should be no problem with storage. If it's going to be parked for a considerable time, it's also recommended to jack it up and remove the weight from the tires - so they don't get flat spots. The fuel stabilizer mentioned is definitely a good idea. Also, store the vehicle with a full tank of gas. This prevents condensation from forming in the tank, and therefore any possiblity water build up in the gas.

As far as the battery, I don't see a need to disconnect it. However, I would look at one of those automatic battery maintainers (battery tender, etc) to keep it properly charged. Sears actually has a decent unit that was only $29 or so when I bought one early this year. Again, this would only be necessary if the vehicle won't be driven for weeks at a time.

I don't drive mine every day, and especially not in foul weather like we've had this week. However, even through winter, I'll probably take it out on clear days (and as long as there's no road salt to worry about) just for some fun. Won't be going top down if the temp's are down below 50 though.

storage

the computer puts a drain on the battery and if you're not careful you'll drain the battery. put a battery tender on it or remove the negative cable to prevent drain. Best place to keep the battery is in a cold area and NOT in the warm basement or garage motordoctor

We're storing Betzee

There's no way I'd drive her through the salt/sand mixtures that they use around here to coat the roads. I couldn't stand to think about what that would do to her finish!

We're storing her with fuel additive, on an insulated surface and plan to start her every couple of weeks or so.

I really dread doing that...not for the work...but because I won't be able to drive her until spring! Rats!

I store my Vette for the winter, mostly because there are no race events for months from Oct to Apr. I normally do the following:

- Put it up on blocks to keep the weight off the race tires
- I keep my battery connected, but start the car every two weeks and let it warm up to normal operating temp to boil off the moisture in the oil which helps prevent oxidation and rust forming in the engine. Since the car is up, I also put it in gear and let the drive train idle (interestingly I have to turn off traction control to do this as it doesn't like the rear wheels spinning and the fronts stopped. )
- I put AMSOIL Gasoline Stablizer in the fuel tank
- I change all the fluids in the Spring before my first event

I know some guys that put their cars in deep storage also put desicant in the interior to absorb moisture and prevent mildewing.

I'm going to store mine this winter, in the apartment parking lot. But just to keep the tires from getting flat and stuff condensing in the engine, I'll probably drive it back and forth to work everyday, and maybe drive it to the malls on the weekends.

You tell 'em, hotrodgirl!

Yes, WINTER!
Slush, snow and ice. Sleet sometimes...snow drifts up to your hind end...
...fire in the woodstove...
...SSR in the garage...
and we'll be waiting for spring!

We're in the 4 seasons section of the country. Sometimes we love it, sometimes we hate it--but there is always variety. And, for those of you who don't get that snowy stuff....if you want some, we can express mail it to ya!
