Question Bed Cover question...

Did not find a definitive answer when I did a search so can someone tell me for sure----is the bed cover on my '06 made of fiberglass or not?

I have an issue with a local Chevy dealer (regarding a DENT put in my cover after service) and he insists they couldn't do it b/c it is fiberglass & fiberglass "doesn't dent."

What do you think?

If the dents are nearest to the roof (toward the middle of the vehicle), they were done by GM when made?
I remember a thread about the small dents in the fiberglass bed cover.

Warrior, we both have '06's. Pic or tell me where it's located and I'll take a good long look at mine in the same area.

Ask the GM guy if he can do this to fibreglass without tearing it.

Bed Cover question...-1gces14p24b108840-20rr.jpgBed Cover question...-metal-lid.jpg

If someone doesn't know the tail gate needs to be down before the cargo lid is closed the top can be dented by trying to force it with the air pressure in the bed. These dents usually will show up near the rear corners, or where the pressure is exerted.

Thanks Bro----If you are standing at the back of the truck looking toward the tailgate it is on the left (driver) side near the outside edge. It is about the size of a nickel but really shows up in black paint.

It sounds like "Cash" just answered your question... The dealer failed to close the lid 1st, before closing the tailgate.

There may be the cause of your new dent.

I got the same dent. The sales guy tried to close it and when it didn't latch correctly used his palms to force it. There you have it. Dent.

Cash---You're scaring me to death with those pics!!

Actually, your description is exactly where this dent is; at the LR corner. I KNOW every inch of my R and I know that dent was not there before I took it in. I talked to the Service Mgr. & I'm going to meet with him later this week.

I'll be crossing my fingers. Thanks for your help.

I had to have "fingertip" dents removed from my lid...... the idiot who tried to close the lid was trying to slam it with his fingertips...... boy was I pissed. Painless dent repair got almost all of it out.

Years ago, I had to have warranty work done on my SSR while out of state. When truck was ready, I took a walk around to be sure all was OK and somehow, I didn't notice the dent where you would put you fingers when closing the lid.
By the time I saw it hours later, I was hundreds of miles west and wasn't going to turn around, head back and fight it with the dealer.

Anyway, local Painless guy took care of the dent in less then 30 minutes.

BTY, We're suppose to have a sign hanging inside the lid telling user how to close the lid correctly. I don't think anybody even reads it.

The sign that RRR mentioned Above is avaliable from whoelse but our Mike in AZ. in fact, I just received mine in the mail today. Thanks Mike.

BTW how were these originally attached? I would imagine it was under one of the carpet cover clips but don't have our truck nearby.

Isn't this your truck in picture 4 of post #22 that Lyn took at the December breakfast? I don't know if the dent you have is covered by that photo, but I don't see any dents in that pic. Of course this was over a month ago, but proof that it wasn't there at that time.

Thanks for all river_rat.
Yes!!, that is my truck at the breakfast last month & there are no dents on the top of the bed cover!!

I wasn't aware there were repro tags available so I've made my own---changed the lettering a bit, RED letter warning & all English in BIGGER lettering. Just need to get it laminated.

I'm meeting with the Service Mgr. (Lone Star Chev.) Thursday so he can see for himself.
~~~~~~Good info on the PDR process, thanks everybody.~~~~~~
The cover is metal, I know because I drilled through it.
I think I'd change service dealers if this one doesn't know the cover is metal.
Talking Take a magnet with you!
Sounds more like a service writer that is winging it. They know very little about the Chevrolet brand. Body shop or Service mgr would know better. (There are 2 plastic panels on the exterior- of the windshield frame).
I am not sure Fiberglass is used anymore. I believe its all Composite Plastics. My 2001 Corvette is Composite material.
I read somewhere, that the Bed Cover is; Galvanized Steel. I think it was on the GM SI. Concerning Body parts.
Actually it was the Service Mgr. that told me the cover was fiberglass (composite).
I tried a magnet & the cover is definitely METAL. I'll be taking that magnet w/me Thursday when I meet with the Service Mgr.
Thanks to all for your helpful input
Ask Lyn to email you the picture to take with you. It is unfortunate that Lonestar caused you problems. I had good luck with them but that was several years back. In Dallas, I would definitely go to Classic Chevrolet, I'm not sure that Classic Chevrolet in Houston (Richmond) has a good SSR mechanic or not. It may be that we have to find a Cadillac dealer or maybe even use North Freeway Hyundai for dealer service. GMPARTSGUY used to work at Demontrond, he may know if they still have a good SSR mechanic.
Maybe I 'picked' the wrong personnel to deal with this time because I have bought 2 new Chevys (before the R) from Lone Star in the past. Always got them serviced there & never had any problems at all........Now This!!
I think they will fix it for me with their PDR man. It's the fair thing to do.
Thanks again r_r
Drive in and pop the lid, ask them to close it for you. If they start to close it with tailgate still up, stop them and point out that is what cause the problem. They can not talk their way out of that one, if they do it in front of you..
I can see where you got the name REBEL-------- LOVE IT!!! .......That is just about EXACTLY what happened when I initially went in with the Service Writer. After he opened the lid he went to close it with the tailgate closed when I stopped him and opened the tailgate first.
Wonder which version the Service Mgr. believes---his or mine?
Thanks, my magnet & I will see tomorrow.
I do like what REBEL suggesting but truthfully, I wouldn't expect a service manager to know how to properly handle or operate each and every signal type of GM vehicle make within the last ten years.
Beside the SSR, how many other vehicles have unique handling procedures?
I think with a positive attitude and your magnet will work wonders.
Hang on a minute here fellows......
I'm all confused here. Which isn't difficult now a days!
My bed cover and others I know of, have a small dent up near the flipper cover on the driver and passenger side. Somehow they were made at the factory and are kind of hard to detect.
is this the same dents in discussion here?
Nope bgetz. These are back near the tailgate, usually in the corners, where someone uses undue force to close the lid because they didn't open the tailgate first.
