Blue dots...possibly illegal, definitely cool!

My husband installed blue dots on the taillights - I think it looks cool! We priced out taillights, they're only $99 each from the dealer if we ever want to go back to stock-

Cool Blue Dots

They are illegal in Wisconsin. been pulled over many years ago for having them in the taillghts. Received equipment warning. That meant I had ten days to put in stock ones or the warning would become a $100 fine.

State statutes say "...no vehicle shall have blue lights in facing forward or rearward except for emergency vehicles.....".

Keep a set handy.

Florida Statutes say the same thing, but you know how it is when a man gets an idea in his head...

Those big old tail lights need something for sure. We need quick change dots (Blue and Red). I have glass blue dots and have stopped myself from installing so far.

There is so much red around them that they don't light up blue (as you can see from close-up picture). I'm not advocating anyone break the law , I just thought they looked cool and wanted to show them off-

Only place I ever knew that gave blue dot tickets was Daytona during bike week, but that was several years ago. It would be really chicken s--t for any law enforcement officer to enforce that law now, because so many of us now have blue dot lenses on our personal bikes. However, there will always be a "hot dog" on every watch. Good luck.

They would bust you in a minute in Va. Bch. I had blue washer nozzles on my other toy and the very day I installed them, I got pulled over and received a ticket. Swaped em out for amber. Perhaps a little red tape over them when driving around and then reveal them at cruises and shows? I would just enjoy them where you are while you can. sounds like the boys in blue are a bit more friendly in your area.

Besides being ornamental is there any other benefit to having them?

The sidepipes? Or the frenched taillights? Both are awesome, but most of us are not talented enough to do the work!

Thank you thats very nice. It really isn't that hard. It just takes time, and a big trash can for the ones that didn't come out right.

Blue Dots

Where did you get the blue dots? How did you install them? How hard was it to drill the required hole? How available are new lenses?

Motor cycle shop , J.C.Whitney , swap meet they even have them with skulls or spiders in custom chrome catalog. I used the weld mark in the taillight as the center point and used a step drill bit to get desired hole size. I used a little clear silicone to make the seal and a long screwdriver with a cloth wraped around it to bend over the tabs. You'll have to take the lights out to do every thing. Hope that helps .Lonnie

Around here the blue dots will get you a ticket faster than no front plate.

BTW, No front plate gives the coppers all they need to stop you whenever they wish.

True story follows - I've posted it before.

The daughter of a co-worker had her Honda stolen from their driveway. It had no front plate. Early that morning the cops called to ask if they knew where her car was. Turned out the thieves were hanging out in an alley way. A passing patrolman knowing this was a group of gangsters, saw the missing front plate and moved in to administer legal harassment, only to find the car didn't belong to anyone in the alley. The car was returned with only minor damage to the locks.

sooooo.... the moral of the story is not to have a front plate.

Colorado requires a front plate, but I have yet to be harassed for not putting mine on; and I've been stopped several times just because the trooper wanted to get a closer look. No mention of the missing front tag. It's not that big of an issue here.

If it becomes an issue, I'll get the bracket from BD Speed shop (mentioned elsewhere) but I'll be damned if I'll drill into the fascia to please a cop.

We've also run blue dots in a '56 Chevy - no problems or hassles. Maybe we've been lucky not to encounter one of those cop/ass hybrids yet.

I was cruising around a local gathering of classic cars with my father when I was about 7 yrs old. We're passed by what, as best I can remember, was a old '30s roadster (he called it a 'ZZ-Topper,' but I was 7, didn't know what that meant). Anyways, the only thing I remember about the car was that it had purple taillights, and I thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Jump ahead about 10 years, and I had just finished painting my first car (Plum Crazy over Raven Black) and I think how cool it would be if I could get those purple taillights. I'm sure they were 100% illeagle, but nothing on my car was legal.

I found the blue dots in my Summit catalog, someone told me thats what was used, so I ordered them for $10, and drilled them into my lights. Only thing I got was a dark circle in the middle of the red taillights.

So my question, if one of you would be so kind (as I am still looking for this option), are the blue dots supposed to make them purple? Or are they just as the name states...blue dots in a red taillight? Were these I saw on the ZZTopper just custom colored lenses?

Anyone done anything like this, or know how it was done? I appreciate the time, and I'll continue my life story when I'm not so tired.

The blue dot's I've seen (very few) didn't make the tail lamp particularlly different just added a sort of eye teasing violet that was difficult to focus on.

Tail lamp reflectors and lenses are built differently now. The SSR's lenses are very transparent compared to the lenses of oh say a 64 Falcon (El Camino). So I don't expect the bulbs are as bright.
