Cam installation

Want to install a new cam in an 05 auto SSR. Mechanic highly recommends pulling the motor to do this. What are pros and cons of pulling or not pulling the motor. Thanks!

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Looks like he's looking for a nice labor charge. I've changed mine twice with the engine in the car.

Thanks for the feedback. Approx total man hours if you can generalize? I want to upgrade lifters, rocker arms, springs and pushrods also.

Now, if you are talking changing the lifters, that changes things dramatically. On the LS engines you can change the cam without removing the intake manifold, as the lifter trays will hold the lifters up after rotating the cam a full revolution, with the rockers removed. The bad news is that the intake and the heads have to be removed to access the lifters, so that ups the labor time and cost a bunch! Unless you have a lot of miles on the lifters, they are good to 7000 rpm with the right valve springs, and don't need to be replaced.

I couldn't give you a very good idea of hours involved, as I usually do my wrenching in the evenings, during the winter, at a leisurely pace. The cam swap itself isn't too bad if you notch the radiator support rather than unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine way up. It gets more involved if you replace the timing set ( a real good idea ), as the oil pump and pickup need to be removed. The balancer bolt should be replaced as it's a torque to yield fastener.

Hey, Sorry Reb, I stand corrected!! :

I've been hiding in the background of SSR Fanatic for a little over ayear now. Been dying to get involved in the forum but didn't want to sound stupid.
I'm more of a backyard mechanic but try to do everything I can myself, much more fun. I've taken my SSR as far as I can with cosmetic upgrades. Put 4:30 gears in, Flowmaster 50 exhaust, K&N intake and HP tune. Now trying to get more serious about power and reading a lot about LS engines. Got a book about building and modifiing a LS engine and now understand why there is no need to take out the motor.... As long as I leave stock lifters in. Doesn't sound like I need to upgrade those anyway. Don't drive hard at all but do enjoy an occasional launch
Rad Rides by Troy, a top builder in the US has a shop 5 miles north of me. Probably should step up to the plate and pay to have it done right. Ideally cam, headers and torque converter.

Why should you be different than the rest of us.
Welcome, it only seems perverted the first time.
