Colored matched plastic over rear fender

Have a yellow '05 and need some advice. About 3-4 inches of the plastic (color matched) molding that fits over the rear fender) came loose.... only at the very bottom. Took the truck to the chevy body shop and was told that it is only held on with double-sided tape. Sure didn't know that.
The shop said the whole piece has to be removed, cleaned , taped and put back on.
My thought was since it's only the bottom 3 to 4 inches came loose...hate to have them pull the whjole piece off....they might not get it back on so it looks like it should. Why not just clean loose part and tape it back. They said no...the entire piece needs to come off.
My concern is their getting it back on to fit tightly and smoothly to the fender again.
Am I being too paranoid about this or would the better way to go is just ask them to do it the way I am talking about? After all, it's only the very bottom few inches that wraps under the body.
Experienced feed-back appreciated.

The only way to do it right is to take it all off. You will not get all of the bad lifting areas off if you don't do that and chances are that what you do think is good might not be anymore since other areas are peeling. If I were to do it I would take it all off.

You would be better off removing the whole peice and regluing it. You could not clean all of the lose peice properly and it will most like come lose in the future.

When I took mine in for sand amage, the pieces on mine were small, and did not wrap under the body... the ones they replaced with was an entirely larger piece (guessing this is a modification after '04?) and the bottoms of those large pieces were not fixed snug. This is one of the things I was going to fix as soon as my got here.... been 3 months now- I wonder how they'll look when it arrives. I was wondering the same thing about getting tape and just fixing that part down...

I believe that those pieces were actually designed to be removed and replaced if damaged by rocks, etc.

Oh yeah, I'm sure- makes perfect sense. Anyone know when they changed the piece to be bigger and cover the whole fender? Assuming the small pieces on my '04 were originals. Wish I had a pic handy...

The stone guards on the '05 have a small hook that helps hold the guard in place at the bottom of the fender/body. The remainder of the application is double-sided tape. When I removed mine to put on 3G rocker panels, I found that the tape had come loose in a number of areas.

Do what they recommended - remove, clean, re-tape the whole thing.

Have running boards, but also lowered and big plain black mud flaps. Took mine off and thinks it looks much better.

I do not think running boards alone would protect you rear fenders enough, honestly. My front mud flaps are about an inch off the pavement, and drop vertically from the reflector height of the wheel well. That gives me fairly good protection.
