Dash won't close

My dash drawer will not catch when I close it. Anybody else had this problem?
Ive always had a problem with it. I've always had to close it 2 or 3 times before it would catch. Now nothing and I wont slam it to try to get it to shut. Guess I will call the dealership.

Dash

There are very tiny teeth or arrows that catch when you close it. One of mine bent, then broke off and mine wouldn't stay closed. They replaced mine without a problem.

Slamming won't work, tried it.

I have the opposite problem. My dash drawer won't hardly open. I have to push on it maybe 5-10 times to get it to open. The part is on order, but has been ever since I took mine in for the broken driver side door handle. So don't be in too big a hurry to get it replaced. By the way, that small drawer/tray makes a nice holder for individual sticks of chewing gum. That's what I use mine for.

Also, at the same time the dealer ordered a replacement for my ash tray door. We don't smoke, but when you open it to occasionally use the plug for charging a cell phone, you can't hardly get it to close again.

Alex,

Had a problem with the small drawer also. When driving, I open it and let my cell phone sit there. It would not open for about 2 weeks and finally I stuck my hand up through the ashtray drawer and jiggled it around and got it open. Danny says it was a tube of chapstick I had in there jamming it but I dont think so. It was small enough to clear. Its been working ever since though. No, I wont be in a hurry, well aware of the parts situation.

There was talk a while back about you shouldn't have to slam it to shut it and that an adjustment could be made to make it catch easier. Might want to do a search. I can't remember what or how to adjust. hope that helps a little.

The coin tray and cup holders are VW/Audi parts. I thought I remember somebody posting up the VW/Audi part numbers (minus the grey cover that matches the SSR dash). I'm sure you could get it faster at one of those dealers.

As far as an adjustment. I had mine out recently, and I don't see where it would be done. Not disputing that it's possible, I just can't see it.

dash drawers

gina, i do the same thing as you, put my cell phone in the dash drawer. i had problems with that one and the dash cupholder not opening, and the dealer replaced them both under warranty. they seem pretty delicate though, i dont think they will last long, so i'm looking for another option for mounting the cell phone.

my glovebox, on the otherhand, never wants to close, i hate to open it, knowing that it will be hard to close. I haven't figured that one out yet, but don't want to waste time at the dealer getting that "fixed" either. It works sometimes, I'm afraid if I bring it in the dealer will tell me they "cant duplicate the problem".

Anyway, even after saying that, if something doesn't work the way it is supposed to on your SSR, take it to the dealer and push them to fix it if it bothers you. I've only had mine 2 months, and already had them replace the a/c blower, the dash drawers, and one of the door speakers. These trucks should be near flawless for what Chevy charged for them, make the dealership take care of you!

Got the part #

I was able to pull my coin tray out. Here's the part number on the paper tag:

4N0 858 373

Get this, apparently Skoda's use this coin tray too.

You know what Gina, I think I was confused about the drawer being the coin holder. My mistake
I did have trouble once with my cupholder not coming out when I Pushed it, but they put a little oil of some sort on it and it has worked ever since!

Slamming the ash tray door will not help. A push at the end of travel is best. A new latch or adjustment of the door to latch fit should fix the problem.

For those that use the electrical outlet inside, there are two outlets on each side of the drawer. Some people do not notice them since they are tucked back out of view.

For the glove box, adjusting the latch striker should fix the problem and you might be able to do that yourself.

Alex

As pointed out by freezer, there are plugs on the outside, sides of the ash tray for power .....

I'm glad I read JimG's book and he covered that tricky ash tray and the cup holders before I banged mine to death.
