Deck Lid Opening 3 Inch Height Increase

With only having my SSR for less than a week I had to experiment with the DecK Lid Opening Height. I easily was able to design a set of Struts that will open the Cargo Lid three more inches at the rear than original. By doing this, I noticed that more light accessed the cargo area plus when I did the trial with loading the Golf Bag, the extra height was a definite advantage for loading. These new Deck Struts will attach to the existing OE mounting points.
This experiment was done with the Factory original hinges, not the New Design that GM has intorduced in the last year or so.
However, when the wife has to close it, please remember that it is 3 inches of further height that she has to reach.
Please respond with any feed back on this posting.

How about a power up/down for the lid (like some SUV's/VANS have)?
By the way I am MORE THAN HAPPY with your struts installed on my 2004 SSR. Above was just a thought.

Now that I'd like to have or something to just open the tailgate without dealing with the lid.

o'boy o'boy o'boy

I have talked with Steve and it looks like I will be a test pilot once more.

When I found Steve and asked for help with our SSR hood struts a couple years ago, I worked with him to get the first struts sized and fitted to my truck. He was so good to me and came up with such a good product that I want to be his test pilot again.

I have asked Steve to stretch the boundaries of the struts to get the most lift height he can for me and still have a safe reliable strut. The bounders being that the strut in lid down position can not bottom out. And in full up position not allow the front of the cargo lid hid the truck body. I hope to have my cargo lid painted for the Niagara run and Steve’s new struts on for better displaying the paint. Those at Niagara could be the first on the east coast to see the new high lift struts from Steve.

definite inerest

This is something I am definitely interested in. I have been hoping one of the engineering typs would come up with a releaseable hinge type arrangement so the deck lid could open to verical. but this is a good step in the right direction. How much? When are they available?

Steve and I spent some time on the phone yesterday. He's still working through the exact length and pressure needed for the "right" strut to open it as big as possible. I expect to have a couple "evaluation" struts sent to me in the next week. These are not for everybody..... the extra 3" of lid opening will put the lid out of reach of some people and their spouses...... That's gonna probably include me..... For you Dwight, this will probably be just right, so you don't bonk your cronk on it...

We're gonna have 4 new part numbers to go with the new length. Black and stainless "original hinges" and black and stainless "new hinges". Right now we are working on the trucks with the original hinges, but the new hinged trucks will be next. The dust should be settled on this in June some time. As you would expect, the trucks with spoilers will be a custom pressure....... we haven't even started to work that part of the matrix yet.

Hang with us buddy, we're getting there.

In case you're wondering......Full swing to vertical has not been considered at this point........ but we'll look.

Regards,

Mike

Short people could add a pull strap that would tuck inside when cargo lid was shut.

Yup. I had a design for one about 2 years ago that never went anywhere. Looks like I'll be dusting it off.

Update,
After further testing, we have finalized the correct length of the New Struts. The only point I can see is that needs to be noted, is the fact that when we did the water run off test last night, a few drops do pass the weatherseal in each of the the front corners of the Deck Lid, and enter the cargo area. This is just a matter of when there is a heavy rain, clear the excess water off the deck lid before you pop it to the full open height position. You could also hold the deck lid at half way open, once popped and allow the excess water to drain first.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reply. Your input on a new design product, may be of assistance to all the Fanatics.

Regards,
Stephen Fenner LST

Mine set up with a couple of pulleys on each side. I need to redo it some day using double pulleys at each end as the single pulleys takes alot of effort to pull.

We have now determined the variables that we have to consider. It appears that on most SSR'S the closed length of the Deck Struts are slightly less on the Driver's Side than the passengers side. With this taken into consideration, a precise and accurate length for the new Deck Supports, that will achieve a three inch extra height increase at the centre rear point of the Deck Lid, has now been established. The first of these both in Black and Stainless will be sent to Rebel and Mike in Arizona for evaluation and test fitment on their vehicles in the near future.
