dedicated ignition keys?

Does anyone know if our ignition keys are "chipped" with a code. Another words , can I just get an extra generic key made that will start the engine or do I need a GM key and have it programmed . Thanks

Keys does not have the computer chip inside. Can easily make copies - good and bad.

I think its for the better. I just took the Lexus in for a new key. $51.00 for the key and another $80.00 and a service appointment to program the computer. Then that does not include the lost $100 fob/remote

You got a deal. My wifes ES300 key came apart (key head is the key FOB) last year. After getting the new key and then programming it to the car I was $250 poorer.....however they did do one heck of a job detailing the car.

It must be part of Lexus "persuit of perfection". My Ford key was $25 and 25 to reprogram. Also once had one reprogrammed by a locksmith.
