I drove Jewel home from work last nite and at the first stop on the way, no problem. The second stop, when I started her, she'd immediately die after an attempt at a very rough idle. After about 4 trys, I could keep her idling. I then drove to meet Boyce for dinner, shut her off. Then thought that I should try to restart her. Same as before, after about 4 tries, I got her to keep running. I went to dinner, came out and started her on the first try, but she doesn't sound right. The speedometer isn't working right, would take off from a stop sign and the the needle wouldn't move, then all a sudden it would jump to 40 mph. The aux gauges aren't working; no torque or voltage.
I noticed the last few days when I started her, I would get a low voltage flash on the hard wired radar detector that I have never had previously.
Is this the dreaded ignition switch problem?? I'm taking her to the dealer tomorrow am, but want to call them today and let them know what I think the problem is, so they can be ready.
not yet - my service writer was on vacation, so I decided to wait and take it in this coming week when he'll be there. He babysits my truck to make sure it is done the right way the first time. He also listens to me (a woman) and the forum. He knows that we have a wealth of info that they (the dealer) doesn't always have access to.
Tried to take Jewel to the dealer this morning, but I couldn't keep her running for more than 10 seconds, plus the tranny was locked in park. I wasn't sure how we were going to get her on a flatbed since she was in the garage and our driveway is on a 35 degree uphill angle. Boyce got up later and jiggled the ignition and was able to get her running and in gear. He parked her out front and the flatbed picked her up. My service writer called me about 2 hours later and said I was right, it was the ignition switch. All error codes have been corrected and she is running like she should. The wealth of information this forum provides is great. I wonder how long the fix would have taken if I hadn't told them what we thought the problem was. I bet it would have taken more than 4 hours.

Glad to hear it Nancy. Keep a spare in your truck for when you travel. Never know when those switches are gonna go south and for about $24, it is cheap insurance.

Very cool that the Writer took your suggestion. Glad you're up & running.

Hmmmm.....Just before the MV ralley there was some discussion on the switch in the 2006 trucks. I thought the 06 models had the new ignition switch that wasn't prone to such failures? Is this the first 06 with a switch failure?

Maybe the later 06's got the improved switch. My truck was built in March of 06. After the dialogue in May with Wingrider, I didn't think I needed to go out and get a spare switch. I guess I should visit the dealer, pick one up and become familair with the R&R process.

My truck is an FPR so I think we all should have a spare switch.
