Electrical Problem

Hi, Kids...

Yesterday, it was warm so I pulled over into a parking lot to lower the top. I stepped on the brake and pushed the button. The usual clicking started then abruptly stopped.

A message scrolled by on the computer screeen that said, "Battery power too low."

Then, ALL my gauges went dead and most of the idiot lights came on.

I turned the truck off and let it sit there for a few minuts.

I restarted and everything came up... for about five seconds. Then, again, all my instruments went dead. The truck continued to run.

I took it to the Chevy dealer. They've been trying to figure the problem all day today. The electrical guy says he's getting hundreds of codes on the diag computer. He thinks it might be a short in the wiring for the top, but he's not sure.

Have any of you run into this? Do you know what the problem is? I need help on this one.

Just a thought...

Pass. side roof lid hinge (tonneau cover) plastic wire loom, some of us have had the wires pop out of the split and they get chafed and frayed and it dies. Some went thru the usual Ignition switch replacement only to find the problem persists and it's this wiring loom or a GROUND as stated in Post #51 by OP.

My hyd. line was wrapped around the stop L bracket and it pinched off the line when it went fully up. Lines re-routed, wires repaired, no problems.

The part # for the ignition switch is 15242754 & costs about $30. Buy one, PM me your email and I'll send you the install instructions.

Good Luck!

That will work. I check my wires every time I do a detail also to check for trash that some how gets in the back compartment (small stuff).

For it to stop working when the top is going down is not a switch problem. It has to be the wires grounding when the top moves.

Black Beauty agrees-its the ignition switch! I had the exact start-stop problem.

wiring problem

They found it today... it was a shorted wire inside the top mechanism somewhere... I'll get it back tonight.

Thanks, you guys.... nice to have the backup.

Hey, great news. Hopefully the problem is due to 'wear and tear' and cannot be attributed to squirrels or mice or owls or ferrets or any of the other vermin discussed on that other thread!
