electrical for trailer

Just picked up the hitch attachment for my SSR. How are the brake and tail lights for the trailer hooled up?

I went to GM and they installed my lights adapter for only $45.

Its very simple. Under the rear, taped to the driver's side frame rail, is the wiring harness with no plug on it. It is taped with black electrical tape. Simply untape it, and four wires are exposed: White, yellow, green, and brown. Here's what they are for:

1) Brown: running lights
2) Yellow: left turn
3) Green: right turn
4) White: ground

Simply purchase the connector from Auto Zone that fits your trailer, and solder the wires to your connector. Wrap them with electrical tape or use heat-shrink tubing, secure them so they don't drag the ground, and you're ready to go. Its simple.

I just finished hooking up a 7-way plug, but it was the same except for the addition of a tap for back-up lights, constant 12 volts to charge the trailer battery (tapped right off the battery under the rear), and an electric brake signal run to the front of the truck (the biggest pain...everything else was smooth sailing). I took the precaution of wiring two relays in line with my running lights and back-up lights since the factory wiring under the truck is so itty bitty teeny tiny that I was concerned about it getting hot with my particular array of trailer lights and my back-up spot lights. It all works great.

Good luck! Let me know if you need any help.

Jeff
