Engine cutoff at 50mph!

Coming home from a trip to Cherokee this evening and about 2-3 miles from home our 06 SSR suddenly cuts off at 50mph. Fortunately traffic was light and we were able to coast into a nearby parking lot. I opened the hood and checked the fuse and relay for the fuel pump and did not find anything unusual. The relay was warm to the touch but I assume this is normal. It was chilly and we had the top down with the heater fan blowing on high for about a half hour when the engine shut.
After I closed the hood she started right up and made it the rest of the way home w/o incident except for he check engine light staring at me. I will be scheduling it into the dealership this week but in the meantime:

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Is the HVAC fan on the same circuitry as the fuel pump possibly causing a relay or something else to overheat?

Thanks,
Derrick & Yvonne

Thanks for the quick response. It seems like the ignition switch is a common source of problems here on the SSR thread. Can anyone be more specific as to how the ignition switch could cause my problem?

Is too much current going thru it or too many accessories tied to it?

Is it overheating?

Is this a known issue with GM & do they have an upgraded switch available?

Is there a campaign or recall on the switch?

I'm asking a lot of questions because I may only get one shot at it. My wife will not drive the SSR by herself now and if it cuts off on the hwy at 70mph plus then the SSR may end up on a CarMax lot & our plans to attend upcoming SSR events will be over.

Help please!
Derrick & Yvonne

Did it again. Forunately this time it was sitting in the driveway idling. I was getting ready to take it for spin and was rearranging some other cars in the driveway. It was idling with the ac on and fan on high. Just as I was getting back in it....it cut off only to restart after setting for about 10 minutes.

We picked up a code reader from Autozone and it displayed the following codes:

P0443
P0689
P1516
P1682

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Took it by Firestone Autoservice and had them check the battery and charging system....both checked out ok. We will be taking her to the dealership this week but would like to have some more info from the forum members here to provide them.

PO443 is loose fuel cap all the other codes you list are electrical system related, If I were you I would look to the ignition switch. Hope this helps you out

Dropped her off at the dealership Friday with the replacement ignition switch & a check engine light on with the codes listed earlier in is thread. The tech said the ignition switch could cause the codes listed. I also had them replace the original battery while they were at it since it was going on 6yrs.

The service advisor called me at 4:00 to let me know they were finished and the $$$. Called me later at 6:00 to let me know that when he went to move it to customer pickup it would not start.

I'm glade it happened while they had it.

If they did replace the ignition switch, and the starter turns the engine over but it fails to start there's obviously a more serious problem.

I'm thinking PCM (powertrain control module) or a fuel supply problem.

This is interesting, so be sure to let us know what they find.

Tuesday evening and they still have no answers other than the run/no run condition happened about 4 times today while they were performing diagonostics. Fornunately at no cost to us. They said they hope to have an answer tomorrow. They have ruled any fueling issues. We'll keep you informed.

Spoke with tech doing the work on the R. He said the problem is the underhood fuse block. When I get the repair order I will relay the info on this thread.

No more problems regarding sudden engine cutoff since the underhood fuse block was replaced. However, this past Friday we picked up the SSR from the storage unit and took her for a quick spin around town before returning home. The next morning, placed the key in the ignition, turned the switch and got nothing. All the dash indicator lights came on but no starter engagement. I also noticed that the steering was not locking and with the ignition in the on position and brake depressed I could not get the gear shift to move out of park.
My 1st thought was that the dealership incorrectly installed the ignition switch. The wife was ready to call a tow truck & drop it on the front lawn of the dealership after the $$$ bill they gave us for the previous work. After further inspection, I noticed that the gear display on the dash indicated that the transmission was in reverse. It turns out that the shift linkage where it connects(snaps onto) the arm or lever coming out of the tranny was dangling and the mechanism that snaps onto the arm was broke. It must have come off when I parked her and shifted from drive to park stopping in the reverse position.
Having said all that in the process of trying to figure out what was going on we noticed that the VIN# is covered with a strip of paper with some block letters. We cannot see all the letters as they disappear behind the dash but what we can make out is "PARCEL TOO". We cannot tell if there is more letters or words before or after this and from the location of the paper it could not have gotten there by accident.

Does anyone know what this means??

Thanks,
Derrick & Yvonne

Send a PM to Dicktator, he has a easy fix for this problem and full instructions on how to do it.
There's also a thread you can search for about that linkage.
Hope this helps you.
