First Time Under the Truck...WOW
Even though the oil life still read 73% (4300 miles since I picked it up in mid August) I decided to change the original oil out now. I took it to the base auto hobby shop this morning and put it on the lift. While the oil was draining is looked it over. A few observations:
- You can definitley tell the truck was sitting for a while in the humid southeast before it found it's home out here. Quite a bit of surface rust on the frame and mild corrosion on some of the steering components (tie rod ends and the tube that replaced the steering gear...not sure what it's called.)
- What a strange front end setup! I couldn't believe the size of the front spindles and distance between the upper and lower ball joints. The front shock configuration is strange too.
- I guess we have a "rear steer" truck. NASCAR used to use this term for certain chassis. Everything is towards the back of the front tire.
- FINALLY GM got smart with the drain plug on the rear end. You no longer have to pull the cover to drain it and the fill plug is very easy to get. Next time I change the oil I'll be putting synthetic gear lube back there.
- When I saw where the oil filter was I just new it would be a mess. Oil would come down on the crossmember and run all over the place. Thanks GM for thinking of the mechanics. They bolted a small piece of plastic that has edges on the back the sides and a lip in the front that helps to channel all that oil forward and not out towards both ends of the crossmember. It worked real well!
- No grease fittings anywhere and no provisions to put any in either! I don't like that. And all the boots looked empty. I know GM stopped putting fittings in years ago but I though they still had holes to install grease fittings. The U-joints looked like they mave have had some holes. I saw some white stuff protruding from hole where you'd expect to see grease fittings.
- I'm real curious to see how the clutch is bled on this truck. I saw the hard line where is goes into the bellhhousing at about the 11:00 position. I guess you have to remove the tranny in order to bleed the clutch?
- Didn't someone post a thread about putting a engine oil cooler on their SSR? Mine already has one.
- It's strange seeing the hole through the cast oil pan.
- The entire frame design is definitely unique comapred to previous full frame GM vehicles.
- It's strange seeing the hole through the cast oil pan.
The LS2 has "the hole" too?? I didn't realize that the oil pan drive axle hole was carried over to the LS2. When I had time on my hands I was going to switch out my LM4 oil pan with an LS2 to eliminate "the hole".
Has anyone else with an LS2 noticed "the hole"??

Bagger: I recently had opportunity to nose around under my 05, 6 spd. Some observations: I have the typical frame rust, both sides which has been reported. Freezer had good story regarding why this rust. I would be interested in hearing of any fixes. I'm not sure you can talk a dealer into addressing this problem with or without warranty. I'm affraid I have the leaking clutch fluid problem. My clutch fluid container was empty and I refilled. I found a trail down the outside of the left front fender inner panel. Clutch seems to be ok and I hate to have dealer get into my clutch, etc. All seems ok, I keep my eye on temp. guage. I have the front fog light jiggle, need Texter's field fix. Turned 10,000 recently on 05. Never drive in winter, keep inside all covered up with battery tender. Scheide.

Where do you attach the vacuum source? It would have to be down at the TO bearing that has the slave cylinder attached. I thought maybe they'd have a bleed line coming out of it to the outside of the bellhousing allowing you to bleed. I did see two hole at about the 3:00 on the bellhousing that were plugged with allen bolts. Not sure what they were for.

I guess I need to read Freezer story on this. I wasn't aware that this was typical for SSR's

Yep - same hole as the 5.3, same splined hubs. Guess were almost ready to go to all wheel drive - should be really easy to find a gear set that will keep the small front tires synchronized with the large rears.
