SO... I'm in the process of getting ready to put in a new stereo and speakers.
But every web page I go to, I see different info about the speakers; such as 4" tweeter - 2" tweeter, 6.5" woofer, 6.75" woofer all up front, and then 3.5" speaker or 4" speaker in the rear.
So to keep from wasting $$$, I decide to open it up and see what I really had.
What I think I've discovered is a lot different.
My R had the nominal system - not the premium bose.
So When I pulled the door apart, I found a 5 1/4" speaker with a little "cheapie" 1" plastic tweeter. The tweeter "hole" in the panel has nothing behind it.
The rear speaker is smaller than 3.5" - but it is 4" across the mounting holes.
So here's the question (I think) - for those of you who have upgraded speakers, did you already have the "premium" set-up so you had larger speakers all around, and just replaced them - did you have the smaller 5 1/4" and just replaced them?
Or should I get the tweeter brackets from GM and the larger bracket for the front speaker from GM and go with the larger speaker there too?
A little disappointed at this point. I still have some time, as this is my Christmas task while I'm off at Christmas - at this point, I have the speakers out and doors back together while I figure it out.

My SSR: Slingshot Yellow VIN 20778 Born 05 May 2005 (05/05/05)
If you have a high-end audio shop nearby, I would drop by and do a little "brain picking" to see what is the highest quality and largest speakers available for an SSR.
Plan B . . . there are a few high-end audio "shops" online that offer great telephone tech support as well as even greater prices than you are likely to find locally.
The Doophus's sound system is basically stock except for a professionally installed Sirius Tuner, however, Bummer (my '86 CJ-7) has a very beefy sound system that I purchased online and had installed.
Doophus - If I was in Tucson - there would be LOTS of places to go.
I'm out in the CA desert - and our local "sound shop" is a car mechanic who also does stereo work - and PERSONALLY not impressed with either capability. I'm more qualified on stereos than they are >sigh<
I took them out, as I might be forced to run down towards LA to a shop - minimum 90 miles, or next trip to Vegas - stop there, and ask the questions you suggest.
I've installed lots of systems over the years, but always just used the stock holes for speakers.
So - does anyone know of a good shop in Vegas that I can stop by and "pick" brains?
rk, there are a few Fanatics that removed thier "premium" set-ups and replaced them with an upgrade. Have you tried to search for thier threads. Also, they might be willing to sell their premium set-ups.
My SSR: 05 6 sp. with 4.56 gears, ZR1 clutch, Edelbrock intake, Lunati cam, Crane rockers, C6 modified pan
Rkenly, I too started with the standard stereo and improved it. I made a Masonite mounting board, using the stock plastic piece as an outline. Then I mounted the new speakers (mine were Alpine component speakers with adjustable crossover controls - 6 1/2" woof. and 1" tweet.) inline with the openings in the door panels. It worked out well for me. Good Luck!

Rod, here are a few shots of my setup. The first pic. shows the mounting board, that is actually 3/8" thick with 1/4" spacers behind each speaker for clearance. I sound matted inside the door panel. 2nd is the bed mounted amp with most wiring routed through the top storage area. 3rd is the Kenwood powered sub mounted behind the pass. seat. Last is the Alpine head unit with a stuffing plate I made up. Hope this helps some.

Yeap, they've been there for over a year now. Had the 3M bra put on the SSR there. They said it was the first 6 speed they had seen. They have done several audio/GPS installs which is what I will be looking at doing also.
Wrong Mink They just moved into their new shop last week. You're thinking of the corner of Dawson & Pleasant Valley Rd next to Big Brand Tires.
The shop they have now is a little bigger and the rent is about half what they where paying before.

Oops , need to read closer. Late night. I'll have to stop by and take a look at the shop. Thanks for the heads-up.

Topspin, do you still have full travel of the passenger side seat with the sub woofer you installed. I spoke with a shop today they told me I woild lose about 4 inches of travel. Thanks!
