Unhappy Fuel Gauge

My fuel gauge is pegged on Above FULL. I had a 1/2 a tank, so I went to add gas just to be an the safe side. It just kept pouring out the top over flow no matter how slow I attempted to refuel. And I know darn well $20.00 wasn't going to fill it let alone over fill.
When I start the engine the fuel gage goes to full, backs down to empty, and then to Above Full reading and not to the exact fuel level

Any Ideas

Attempting to add fuel after the pump shutoff has already been activated is not good. It ovefills the tank beyond where the designers intended, and screws up the vent system. Filling should stop once the pump has clicked off.

It does soud like either the fuel sensor in the tank has hung up, or the signal has been corrupted or shorted. This will take a dealer visit I think.

Then wait 5 seconds for the pump nozzle to drain into the gas tank's filler tube, before removing the nozzle ... prevents gas spill down the fender.
