Just read this thread Fuel Mileage and thought it might be fun to talk gas mileage, since it is now over $3.00 a gallon for 93 Octane here-St.Louis, Missouri. I was lucky enough to get some 110 Octane Unleaded Racing Fuel on my recent trip to Indiana for $4.49 per gallon. So currently, I am running 3/4 93 Octane and 1/4 110 Octane. Went cruising today to hand out Car Show flyers and averaged 20.7 MPG, mostly highway. I have just turned over 2,500 miles on the 6.0L, 6 Speed SSR. Last Fill up was 18.9 combined City and Highway on June 3. The 6 Speed turns about 1,800 RPM in Sixth Gear at 70 MPH. What do the automatics turn in overdrive at 70 MPH with the stock rearend? I never go by the DIC, as it is not accurate.

I've never noticed what my automatic turns at 70mph. I hate interstates and avoid them every chance I get, so cruising at 70 is only an occasional thing. As for the cost of gas, factoring in inflation and the declining value of the U.S. dollar, it's cheaper now than it was when I was filling the 40-gallon tank on my Scout II 30 years ago. If the price of a gallon of gas is a concern, then an SSR probably ain't what you ought to be driving -- at least not at 70mph.
Gassed up yesterday (Sunday) in Pa. at $2.99 per. First time in my life that I paid with a $100 dollar bill. Guess what, it took $50 to fill my up. I have same set up as yours, 05, 6spd, now at 8500 miles. I get 22.1 at 70 MPG, cruise, Ohio T-pike in hot conditions. I don't expect anything better than that.
Has anyone else in CA noticed a drop in their MPG over the last few weeks? Given easy crusing conditions I have lost an average of 4-5 mpg recently. I have talked with a few other people who have noticed the same on different makes and models. Someone has said that the ethanol mix has been changed lately in Cal, but that could just be heresay.
a change in mpg lately on my 98 Chevy K3500 Crew cab. I was getting 14 mpg when I first brought it from Texas, pretty quickly after getting it onto Cali. gas, it dropped to 12-13, now I'm down around 9.5-10 not driving any differently! I pay for gas with a $100 bill and have enough left over for a Slurpee and napkins to cry into. Right now the SSR is the most economical vehicle I have to drive...never thought I'd say that.
My SSR: '04 Purple (Penelope)#3438 1st '04 Production UV and '06 blue over silver auto, #22851 #5 0f 32
Traveled from Atlanta GA to Winchester VA yesterday on my way to Albany NY. Filled up to the tune of $55.56. The interesting part was the avg mileage on the DIC said I was at 19.9 mpg for 400 of the 550 miles. The actual calculated figure was 20.1.
The day before traveling from Shalimar to Atlanta the DIC indicated 18.3 mpg when I was getting 18.5. That was for 365 miles.
I believe the PCM/ECM "learns" how your driving and adjuts the air/fuel mixture accordingly to explain the difference in the mpg figures.
My .02 cents.

Peace

I consistently get 22-23 on the highway and 18-19 in stop and go traffic, including dead stopped traffic. I check it myself, the DIC is not accurate. You an only get an accurate reading if you top off the tank to the point where you can see in the filler tube that the gas is actually full. It takes several minutes to do this, since the SSR is difficult to fully fill. But, if you don't, you can easily have a 2 gallon variable in how much gas you fill with, which leads to meaningless MPG figures.
Has anyone done any mods that actually saw an improvement in mpgs, like k&N, synthetic oil, tunes, etc? I bought this car for looks, not the power, so any mods I can do to improve mpg's is what I'm looking for.

If you bought it for the looks, slow down so people can actually see you. Then, your mileage will get better. None of the mods you listed do anything measurable or consistently repeatable for better mileage. If mileage was a concern, you should have gotten a 6 speed. Much better mileage than the automatic. Buying an SSR and worrying about mileage is kind of an oxymoron.
Metro's get good mileage. One of GM's best cars...whoops, they didn't even build it, Suzuki did! Lots of backlash and jokes about Metro's, but out of all my cars, that one has been the most trouble-free...and its got more than 200000 miles on its 3 cylinder, gets 50mpg, the A/C is great (no whine or noise on blower setting 2), you can get out of it (door handles work), and they don't overheat. If your worried about gas mileage you can't go wrong with a Metro!!! Hey, where's the "Metro Fanatic" site??? LOL...
The point about increasing ethanol content in gasoline and its impact on mileage is an interesting one. I never check the mileage on my SSR, since it's just for fun and the occasional road trip.
My daily driver is a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L 6-cylinder, and I've noticed that lately (this summer), it's getting noticeably fewer miles between fill-ups. I get all its service done at a 5-star dealer, and see to regular (annual or 12K) air filter changes. I was wondering lately if it might need a new fuel filter. Maybe its just the gasohol!
I agree that -- in inflation-adjusted dollars -- gasoline is cheaper than it was 30 years ago, but there's still the psychological impact of the price to fill up. If it's accurate to factor poorer gas mileage into the mix due to increasing ethanol content, it's a double-whammy!
Not a answer to you question, but if you ....
*ROLL INTO THE GAS
*WHEN COMING UP TO A LIGHT STEP OFF THE GAS LET MOMENTUM CARRY YOU.
*DRIVE WITH CRUISE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
*KEEP TIRE PRESSURE UP 30PSI
*QUALITY OF GAS MAKES A DIFFERENCE
IF YOU CAN DRIVE LIKE THIS A LM4 5.3/ AUTOMATIC IN THE PAST GIVE ME 23.1 MPG AVERAGE
BUT NOW I PLAY MORE AND MY AVERAGE HAS DROPPED TO 16.7
I don't drive fast, have no need or desire to. I'm not "worried" about SSR milage, just was asking if any one has done any mods to improve milage. I have a motorhome that at best gets 8mpg, so I know what a gas guzzler is and am not really worried about fuel costs, but still, if I can tune or make mods to reduce fuel consumpsion, why not. I also drive a 81 VW rabbit diesel pickup that gets 60mpg (after a BAE turbo mod). The gas guage hasn't worked for the past 6 yrs, but I don't care, I fill that tank every 2 months or so. :-)
While i know most on this board want more power and speed from their SSR, I don't. I already feel like I'm speeding as it is!

I remember filling my mom's 64 Chrysler Custom Newport (30 gals) and the cost was in the mid 30 cents/gal. I'd have been 8-10yrs old then. I don't think dad was making more than about $10-12/hr and he was paying for a 3bdrm house and a new car at the time.
So If I go by my rule of thumb that everything doubles in price each decade...
then $3.00 > $1.50 > $0.75 > $0.37 Yep that was about the price of gas in 66.

Notice about a 1/2 mpg increase with the change to 4.10 gears. They should pay for themselves in about 70000 miles assuming gas stays around $4.00 a gallon.
Low to high 19 MPG on every tankful. 22 mile trip to work with both city (5 miles)and (17) highway. 70 to 80 MPH on the highway travel. I am very satisfied with the mileage on a 6.0 in an 05' SSR .

I bought an 05' Honda Goldwing last year for the gas savings, I figured it out, it gets 40+ mpg, counting the insurance and savings over my truck MPG, it will pay for itself in slightly less than 100 years!
