Gears - the other way

Has anyone gone the other way with the gear ratio?
I was thinking of going with 3:42's.
I have a 6 speed and first gear is kind of low so I don't see a problem with that.
I also have a set of Boyd Coddington 20" wheels to put on and I was going to run the 315/35-20 Toyo's on the rear.
These are 1/2 inch smaller diameter. (Mike Powell was running these with no clearance problem.)
Can the speedometer be corrected through a tuner with both a gear change and tire diameter change on a 2006?

Charlie

I really, really think you would be dissatisfied going that way with the gearing. Sixth gear would be virtually useless until maybe 80 mph. It is very harmful to an engine's crank bearings to run highway speeds at say 1300 rpm.

In addition, you would be significantly impairing the acceleration, AND also increasing the REAL load on the engine around town.

God bless you if you want to do it, but I think you would regret it.

I agree at 70 MPH on flat ground it's OK but any slight hill and you can feel it
lugging. My 6 speed feels about right at 1900 RPM on the road but that's driving way to fast. Charlie this is just my .02 but I'm leaving mine alone for now.
Later buddy

There would be no benefit at all. But I know that it sounds good. but truly the top gear is designed to be efficient, geared where it is.

I think the stock gears are perfect for cruisin around. Leave the stockers in there. Save your $$$

As a 6 sp. owner I agree with everyone above. By going to the .5" shorter tires, you have in effect 3.80 rear gears, a nice combo. First gear is low in the SSR trans. for a reason; it's a very heavy ride! If you're ever next to an 18 wheeler at a stop light see how far they move in low gear. They will make 3 gear changes before you're out of first. Gear multiplication is really your best bud in a heavy vehicle with a manual trans. With the SSR being somewhat notorious for clutch issues, I sure wouldn't abuse it more with a higher gear change. This is my third summer on my 4.56s and I wouldn't dream of changing back. Just back from a 2K mile road trip and still averaged 20.5 mpg with a lot of stop and go and mountain driving and the trunk full.
