If you're looking to buy a navigation system, the GARMIN c340 is perfect for the SSR. I did my homework and determined this unit does everything you need. The suction cup mount allows you to mount it on top of the center console below the dashboard. It has Text-to-Speech which can virtually pronounce any street name instead of "right or left turn ahead". Because it says the street names you never have to look at it while you're driving. It has great touchscreen controls & 3-D imaging. You can even buy a faceplate set and change colors like I did to match my REDLINE RED.
My SSR: ricochet silver 2004 all options available for o4 on it, was dealers demo mod born on 3-26-04

Prior to my trip to the Southeast SSR get together in Daytona I purchased a Garmin c-330. With the addresses of my fellow SSR Fanatics inputed, the SSR virtually drove itself to the destinations I wanted.
As you mentioned you have done some intensive research and I would concur that the additional options on the 340 are worth the extra $.
Mine does not give the street names while in motion, just the turn left or right prompt. This would be handy but not essential.
Once you travel with electronic navigation you wonder how you did without it.
The greatest plus is now I can enjoy the drive with the knowledge that I won't get off my intended route.
I have the Garmin favorites list set for Maggie Valley and my bag is packed.
The SSR trip of the season is in May, be there!!!!

I have a question, does they Garmin system automatically "mute" the stereo or does the stereo have to be turned off?
I couldn't get anyone to tell me if there is an automatic mute button on our stereos??

OK Fred, usual questions
1) Where did you buy it?
2) How much was it?
I use the Clarion NICE nav system. The main reason I got it was for the larger screen (7 inches). It's kind of a tight fit behind the shifter, but it works. It has a huge hard drive (can hold 10 gigs of mp3's, besides all the maps), and has a Sirius Radio option as well as a/v hookups for a dvd player. It will also speak the road names, I think it'll do all the ones I've come across (however I may just be in an area that doesn't get more complex than I-80 or 1st Ave). Price was pretty inexpensive, around $750 at Abe's of Maine ($1,000+ elsewhere). Althought you can't get a Redline or Slingshot face, the brushed aluminum doesn't look too different than the satin chrome.
Only downfall is that the choice between an onboard speaker, or FM transmitter, neither work exceptionally well, especially over long distances. But I like my music loud, if that's not your style, you might be able to hear the internal speaker prompt.
The Garmin 320 is $349, buy a 1 gig sd card and you have all the maps. I like it's diminutive size and I got the optional bean bag mount and it easily moves between the three family cars/trucks. I don't like suction cups because they can come loose and they are messy when moving around various cars.

Reading all the different GPS being used...I have a TOM TOM GO 700. Used it last weekend on a road trip,,,loved the heck out if. It is less expensive than a lot of them but really did a wonderful job of keeping me on track...best of all was in a town i had never been before and just punched up resturants and it tooks me right th the Outback of my choice..must have listed 25 selections. My life not will not leave home without it... Oh forgot...paid $599.00 for it
I have seen some that do, that is why I was wondering. There are sooooo many to look at. I finally got a Garmin 2620 (?) Good price $380.00! I was wondering why the Magellans were so much cheaper too!

Both of the units that you mention are discontinued thus the price drop. BTW, the Garmin 2620 is still considered a top of the line unit that gives way points that most others do not. For sales reps, the 2620 is a must have for routing their day.! Excellant buy.
