Are Headers Worth it?

I am ready to replace the stock exhaust & now I'm kicking around doing a Heads to Tips job. Is it worth the bucks for headers & cats with pipes/mufflers too? Dollars spent to Horsepower gain, pain in the butt factor too. Give me some real info.....Thanks

Hey Cajun I have a 2004 ssr with the kooks 1 7/8 headers installed with the high flow cats and I love them. The muffler is Still stock but I felt a good bit of horsepower in the 2500-4000 range. It's not your neck snapping performance but a real pull. I also had a cam change and a torque converter before I put the headers on. I live about 30 minutes from new Orleans not sure where bunkie is at but your welcome to drive my
04 to see how it compares to your 05

I'm now living in Marksville. I have the 05' 6.0 automatic. The main question that I have is the cabin heat factor.

When I purchased mine I got them sent off the get jet coated sterling silver was the color I went with it is supposed to protect up till 1200 degrees. I feel no cabin heat what so ever no heat Under my feet , nothing. I know you have the 6.0 but your power range is going to be different than mine like I said it's the pull that I like.

Since you asked here is my .02. You will get more bang for around the same bucks if you change the rear axel ratio. Unless you are planning on doing future head work and a cam change I wouldn't put my money into headers, the factory exhaust manifolds are actually pretty good with stock heads and cam.

I agree with Poppa that the factory manifolds are well designed. I was somewhat surprised when I removed them, this past winter. They are both generous in port size and they have decent length and flow path. I did replace them however, with a set of Kook's headers with high flow cats. You may want to take a look at the thread "OBX or Kooks headers", where there's some discussion of brands and costs. In fact I'll bump it up after this post. Mine is a 6 speed and installation was a breeze, as I had the trans. and b. housing out along with having the crossmember and oil pan removed. Other threads have stated significant work was involved with the installation on auto. models. If you're looking for "bang for the buck", I feel it's not real high on the list trailing a gear change, convertor change, and cam change. I was very happy with the outcome of the header change though - no regrets!

Thanks for all the input,....Never thought that the OEM manifolds would be that free flowing.

Are the same manifolds on a 03 & 04 R as the 05 & 06?
