Headliner repair

Rear Headliner Repair.

Wife noticed separation of vinyl from base material around rear window, Florida Heat I concluded. This is also where some rattle comes from.

Removing Rear Headliner,

Open roof about 8” or so, remove three push buttons across top of the Rear Panel (Smaller Half of Roof). Remove three push buttons on the Roof Panel, below window.

Must Pull down from front half above rear window to separate factory Velcro (Not Velcro, plastic pieces that push together like Velcro). I had two that were no longer attached to roof, allowing the roof to “Rattle”. You can slip hand in behind the panel at the top of the window.

MUST REMOVE HEADER PANEL BY SLIDING DOWN INTO ROOF COMPARTMENT! Won’t come out through the cab.

I used contact cement to repair the separations around the window and then added chrome door trim to keep it from separating again. I would use black door trim, (if I were to do it again), black would have blended better, in my opinion, still a choice of the owner.

I remove the old 3M tape from the roof Factory Plastic Velcro, cleaned area, prepped with “Promoter” (Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter, any Advance Auto or Such) installed NEW 3M tape. I installed heavy duty Velcro strips on each side of the push pins. Cleaned area with Promoter.

I also installed one inch foam strips with tape backing full length on each side of window panel. This is, I believe, where the rattle comes from by hitting on roof hinge assembly.

Reinstalled Header by sliding back in through the roof compartment, suggest using New push pins, push pins in and make sure Velcro is sticking. After Header is back in place, you must push HARD, bang on the roof panel to get Factory plastic Velcro pieces to go together.

Very snug and quiet now.

Picture
1. Roof ajar so you can reach push pins.
2. Remove push pins top and bottom, three at bottom can be reached thru the roof compartment.
3. Slide down panel into roof compartment.
4. Panel in roof compartment, just lift out, notice no tape on the Plastic Velcro
5. Taping with 3M on Factory Plastic Velcro

Jeff, I did Fatmat, Peel & Seal actually on the main Headliner some time ago.

Couldn't see, feel any difference, so I didn't bother with the rear panel.

There may be a difference, but I would say minor, air space is also good insulator also.

Merry Christmas Jeff!
