Welcome to SSR Fanatics. You'll find all you ever wanted to know about your SSR right here on this site.
For now about the overheating. They all do this and there are lots of remedies. Click on the "search" feature and type in Overheats. That should keep you occupied until Thanksgiving.

the fan is a two speed fan what happens is the high burns out Its cheap some say it looks like the fan vw uses . if your just a stock 5.3 2004 ssr you could get the fan set up in front as a pusher or you can the one that replaces the stock fan is very easy to install. both are highly recomended to get from simple engineering. just do a pm to mikeinaz he is the man to get them from use the search icon and see just some of the things to do

simple engineering also has a larger capacity radiator also but with the 5.3 you dont really need it

Overheating Problems

Slojo:

One easy thing to check is the filler cap on the reservoir for the radiator. This has been a problem for some reason. If the reservoir has a crack in it the pressure in the radiator will not be correct. Some of us have had just the cap being loose or not tightened good enough to hold the pressure. Be sure not to over tighten the cap also.

This would be worth a try...

Stop and go traffic is the hardest on the SSR ccoling system. Two reasons... #1 there is not enough airflow through the radiator, ewspecially if you have a little tailwind, it re-ingests its own hot air and can't get the heat out. #2 the water pump does not move enough water (or coolant, if you please) at idle to make an efficient amount of BTUs available to the radiator to dissipate.

The main cooling fan is controlled by both the temperature and the A/C. If you turn on your A/C to a very low speed setting, it will still cause the main fan to run. That will prevent your truck form getting out of hand.

The stop and go traffic that has you only taking your foot off the brake means that your allowing the engine to just idle and retain the heat in the block. Occasionally selecting neutral and running at 1200 rpm for 15 seconds will do a lot to ge the hottest coolant into the radiator.

Combining the A/C switched on with an occasional 1200 rpm will do a lot to dump the heat.

Regards from the desert,

Mike

SO glad I have Mike's aux fan!!!!

Took my truck in today for overheating. I told them the low speed of the cooling wasn't working and even made sure they had the fan in stock beforehand. I had a nine am appt. after about an hour was told that it was the ac control module and they didn't have the part but would have one sent over. Should be there around noon. SOOOOO, I waited. About 1pm was told the part was in and should be only a few more minutes. SOOOOOOO, I waited. Finally at 2pm.was told the fan had to be replaced and my truck would be ready in a few minutes. I know I'm not a technican, but I knew what was wrong. SOOOOO, after a 5 1/2 hour wait I got Betsy back and she's running fine again. Very Frustrating, but glad for the good outcome. Thanks Mike, your aux fan saved me!!! Worth every penny!! was able to get to the dealer and get a fix and not be left sitting by the road in an overheated truck.

colville automotive also makes a nice dual fan for the SSR

Just another option, they are in Texas. Mine works perfectly and the truck never overheats. I think both fans are good.

E'gads, thank you. I expereinced a over heating problem in Houston while waiting fifteen minutes to get through a toll booth. I do not think I had the AC on because the temperature outside was around 70 degrees.

Cooling in Conroe,

John

Over heating

I have an 04, and had the same overheating problem.

I took mine to a race shop (specializing in Vettes) and they changed the GM Factory settings in the comupter.

Factory setting for fan to come on the 04, is 233 degrees.

They set my fan to come on at 185 degrees and below 35mph.
I have not had the temp above 205 sense.

Just another option for you to look at.

PS. YOUR DEALER WILL NOT RESET THE COMPUTER!!

Slojo: My original OEM fan seemed to be working ok but I didn't trust it. Always watching the temp. guage. So I bought one of Mike's pusher fans and installed. Easy to install, very good directions, take your time. Mike is good guy to work with. Have made a few trips, fan kicks on as needed. Even runs by it's self when put away in the garage in a hot condition. Hope this helps and if I understand, Welcome to our SSRFanatic site. You will enjoy this site.

I purchased the pusher (aux fan) from Mike first for my 05 SSR. That SSR would run hotter than most other SSRs. When I traded in my 05 SSR for my current 06 SSR two tone, I removed tha aux fan and installed it on my 06 SSR.

When Mike had the replacement shrouded puller fan ready for sale, I purchased that as well along with the auto transmission cooler.

The pusher fan will kick in for short periods of time after
