Help with clutch issue / TSB

Sinister has an issue with the clutch pedal going all the way to the floor and sticking there at 6000 rpms. From what I understand, this is a problem with the springs not being able to handle the centrifugal load the truck can send their way, and there is a TSB on it.

The dealer is saying the clutch is only covered for 12 months/12000 miles and there is nothing they can do because it is a "wear" item. My position is this is a mechanical failure/defect on GMs part - the clutch itself isn't worn as it only has 6000 miles on it.

The dealer says they've called everyone they can and can't do anything - they advised me to call 1-800-CHEV-USA and get them involved. I would appreciate any info or advice you may have before I call. Also, doesn't a TSB mean that an item should be repaired if a customer complains? Dealer tells me they're just "informational for the technicians".

Help!

vettegirl... Maui Mike gave me the information on the TSB for this issue. If no one else responds give ol' Mikey a pm. 12,000 miles warranty on this clutch? Sounds like a bunch b.s. I believe TSB stands for Technical Service Bulletin...

1-800-CHEV-USA seems to be a Roadside Assistance number? Is there a better number to use?

Just got off the phone with them, they tried to call my dealer while I was on the phone but everyone's in "a meeting".

While I was on hold I did find the TSB and all the info that you used to get yours repaired - thanks to everyone who provided so much info to Anne!

I got mine replaced after 1 year. The first dealer would not acknowledge a problem. The second dealer was as accommodating as can be. However, the new clutch is no better than the original. Clutch will stick & produce a burning odor high on high RPMs
I don't want to burn the bridge with dealer #1. The "How Are We Survey" is sitting on my desk. I'm so tempted to let them know that they are as good as their last meal....

here is the bulletin for the clutch pedal nt returning

Document ID# 1696563
2005 Chevrolet SSR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject: Clutch Pedal Does Not Return to Up Position During Shifts at High Engine RPMs (Inspect Date Code and Replace Clutch Kit) #05-07-31-001A - (08/17/2005)

Models: 2005 Cadillac CTS-V

2005 Chevrolet Corvette, SSR

with Tremec T56 6-Speed Manual Transmission (RPOs M10, M12, MM6, MZ6 )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This bulletin is being revised to add the RPO MZ6 6-Speed Manual Transmission. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-07-31-001 (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Some customers may comment that while shifting at engine speeds greater then 6000 RPMs, the clutch pedal does not return to the up position. As the engine speed decreases, the clutch pedal will return to the up position.

Cause
It is possible that when the engine speed is greater than 6000 RPM and the clutch pedal is depressed, centrifugal loads on the clutch diaphragm spring may be greater than the clutch return load from the diaphragm spring. This force created by RPM would be directionally opposite to the clutch bearing force, causing a near net zero or less than zero return force. As a consequence, the clutch pedal may be stuck at the bottom of travel at the floor. Once the engine speed reduces to less than 6000 RPM, spring return load dominates and the clutch pedal returns to normal function.

Correction
Inspect the clutch date code and replace the clutch kit if built PRIOR to the following date code:

• 4M21A/B/C for CTS-V and SSR

• 4M13A/B/C for Corvette

Remove the transmission to inspect the date code on the clutch pressure plate (4). Refer to the applicable procedure below:
• Corvette -- Clutch Assembly Replacement (SI Document ID #1399532)

• CTS-V -- Clutch Assembly Replacement (CTS-V) (Document ID #1453054)

• SSR -- Clutch Assembly Replacement (SI Document ID #1581481)

Important:

The suspect clutches were built PRIOR to the following date codes:
• 4M21A/B/C for CTS-V and SSR

• 4M13A/B/C for Corvette

The date code is located on the pressure plate cover as shown above.
Replace the clutch kit (see part list below) if the date code on the pressure plate is PRIOR to the following date code:
• 4M21A/B/C for CTS-V and SSR

• 4M13A/B/C for Corvette

The date codes are interpreted as follows:
• The first character is the year.

- 4 = 2004

- 5 = 2005

• The second character is the build month.

Important: The letter J is not used in the month code.

- January = A

- February = B

- March = C

- April = D

- May = E

- June = F

- July = G

- August = H

- September = I

- October = K

- November = L

- December =M

• The third character is the day of the month.

Important: It is possible that the fourth digit, the shift code, may not be present on the date code. The shift code does not play a critical part in determining a suspect clutch kit.

• The fourth, and final, character is the shift code = A/B/C.

Well, got in touch with the GM Customer Assistance Line. They were extremely nice and helpful. Explained my issue, gave them the TSB number - they didn't understand why there was a TSB and the dealership was denying the repair, so tried having a conference call with me and he SA or SM but neither was available.

Anyway, SA just called and said they "hadn't heard from GM but they'd go ahead and install the upgraded clutch". Yeah. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Oh well, at least I'll be able to do burnouts again.

I'm not sure, that's just the term the service guy used.

Clutch Fluid ?

I'm going to change the clutch fluid in Kim's .
Have any of you tried the 5.1 fluid ?
Could you tell any difference? If so, what?

Gm just replaced my entire clutch, mastercylinder through clutch and pressure plate.
I asked them to use super dot 4, they say they did. The fluid was burnt and bubbling out of mastercylinder.
SA told me GM has new advisory for all v8 6 speeds to flush clutch fluid every 2 years to maintain warranty.
Just passing on what I was told. So far my clutch is much better but I only have 100 miles on it.

I had my clutch replaced. Shifts a lot smoother than the original but haven't wound it up to 6000rpm yet. Prepare yourself, as the dealer has to take your SSR apart to get the clutch part numbers and they won't put it back together. My parts took 2 weeks and they told me it was a "rush order" because they arranged to fly the parts in.

I believe that quite a few fanatics have changed the fluid to 5.1, but my dealer didn't want to. I figure they're the ones who are warranting it so I'm just gonna go with their recommendation... and wait till the inevitable next time.

Mine was at the dealer for 29 days . Trans/clutch were disassembled. The R was pushed in & out of the shop daily until the parts came in.
My instructions were Do Not Leave the R out at night.

SSRHEARTBEAT
I changed mine to the super dot 4 or 5.1 fluid as some call it about 3000 miles
ago. So far it is still the same color and I haven't seen any coming out the top vent. I used a turkey baster to suck it out, just make sure you use plenty of covers on the fenders and around the master cylender. I got it at the F... dealer
for around $11.00 for a good size can. While I was at it I also did the brake master cylender and both on the wifes Trans Am. Her 01 WS6 was black and
crusty looking. We could tell the difference on hers right away the way it went into gear.
Later,
Tom

Do any of you know if the clutch kit is readily available now? Call me suspicious, but they agreed to replace it at 6:00pm Monday, called at 6:00pm yesterday and said they had all parts in and it would be ready today. Are they doing a "let's not do it and say we did"????? Hmmmmm....

(This must be why I saw my picture on the showroom door with "DO NOT SELL THIS WOMAN ANOTHER CHEVY" under it. ).
