In order to remove the consol gage cluster MUST one remove the ashtray door housing??? If so how is that done?? I can't see underneath but it 'feels' like there are Philips screw holding it in but there is no room for a screw driver. No problem unsnapping the housing but it wont come out from under the pillow, which tells me maybe I must remove ashtray housing door to get gage cluster out. Any body got advice for this poor old pharthed. grimmye

If you have a digital camera you might use it to see what is under there. Just point and shoot, then look at it. If it doesn't tell the story try a different angle. May or may not help but the best I can offer.

no, you don't need to remove the ash tray door. the gage pod is just held in place by four spring tension retainers. just pull back on the gages and they will come loose.

no, you don't need to remove the ash tray door. the gage pod is just held in place by four spring tension retainers. just pull back on the gages and they will come loose.
Pull up on both sides of the front of the housing - the spring retainers will release.
1. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) center trim panel
2. Remove 4 screws that retain the cluster bezel to the I/P.
3. Partially remove the cluster bezel to gain access to the electrical connections.
4. Disconnect the electrical connections.
And for the Center trim panel:
Disable the SIR System. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling and SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
Remove the left and right instrument panel (I/P) trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side and Instrument Panel Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side .
Remove the inflatable restraint instrument panel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
Move the steering wheel to the full down position.
Remove the 5 fasteners from the center trim panel.
Release the retaining clips from the center trim panel.
Remove the instrument panel cluster (IPC) seal from the IPC.
Disabling Procedure - Air Bag Fuse
Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Place the ignition in the OFF position.
Important: The SDM may have more than one fused power input. To ensure there is no unwanted SIR deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs, remove all fuses supplying power to the SDM. With all SDM fuses removed and the ignition switch in the ON position, the AIR BAG warning indicator illuminates. This is normal operation, and does not indicate a SIR system malfunction.
Locate and remove the fuse(s) supplying power to the SDM. Refer to SIR Schematics or Electrical Center Identification Views .
Wait 1 minute before working on the system.
Enabling Procedure - Air Bag Fuse
Place the ignition in the OFF position.
Install the fuse(s) supplying power to the SDM. Refer to SIR Schematics or Electrical Center Identification Views .
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The AIR BAG indicator will flash then turn OFF.
Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle if the AIR BAG warning indicator does not operate as described. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - SIR .
Disabling Procedure - Negative Battery Cable
Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Place the ignition in the OFF position.
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
Wait 1 minute before working on system.
Enabling Procedure - Negative Battery Cable
Place the ignition in the OFF position.
Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The AIR BAG indicator will flash then turn OFF.
Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle if the AIR BAG warning indicator does not operate as described. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - SIR .
I did that and it comes loose no problem! However, "IT" won't slide out from underneath the IP going sideways and it won't go forwards in the vehicle far enough to let it slide out. "IT" also won't slide rearwards up and over the consol to come out. Tomorrow I will take some pics and post, too late today, I need some rest for my Sp02 to catch up. grimmye
I would like to mention that I have recently removed and re-installed my IP Cluster 3 times without disengaging the SIR with no problems (this was while installing my yellow gage face). What I'm having a problem with now is the 3 gage cluster on the consol (floor). grimmye

That's because "it" has spring retainers front and rear, for a total of 4, 1 on each corner. After you lift up the front and the retainers release, do the same at the rear on each side and then pull it forward.

I was able to remove the gage consol and switch to Yellow housing and reinstall with out removing anything else.

Just like I said, the swelling went down and it came out. New housing looks great.

BLACK??? Are you sure it isn't brushed chrome? See how it is...out of sight, out of mind...the STALKER is currently parked in a big, safe garage right now while mine is getting redone.
