Here's one I haven't heard before...

Dad's 06 has a bit of a hiccup. My gut is it’s the ignition.. but with a twist. He says it’s happened twice. You know how you depress the brake pedal and then turn the key... He's gone to turn the key and can't... but the brake pedal stays depressed & won't come back.

What's your best guess...

Is the steering wheel locked? try pulling it one direction or the other to release the pressure and see if the key will turn then.

The automatic tranny SSRs do not have a steering column that locks the steering wheel with the ignition key removed or in the "Off" position. I've owned 4 automatic SSRs and all of them did not have a steering column lock feature. Especially after replacing the number of power steering pumps in my 04 SSR which require you to turn the steering wheel from left-to-right-to-left (over and over) to help bleed the system, I know it does not lock the steering wheel when in the "Off" position.

There is a difference between the manual and automatic tranny SSRs with the manual tranny SSRs requiring a button push before being able to turn the key to the from the "Accessory" to the "Off" position. I'm not sure if the manual tranny SSR steering column locks the steering wheel when the ignition switch is in the "Off" position.

As to why the brake pedal will not return to its full upright position when released, there must be a mechanical reason for that. Either the pedal, the brake master cylinder internals or vacuum boost unit is/are being blocked by something. When I replaced my 04 SSR's master brake cylinder (leaking at the rear seal of the unit), I did not see anything that would normally block the return of the brake pedal.

The description of the problem just doesn't sync up with anything I can think of at this time.

LT, I know your dad wanted an 03/04 but purchased an 06. I would assume he has an automatic tranny SSR, correct? The problem occurs when trying to start the SSR or when trying to turn off the engine (which direction is he trying to turn the key)?

Manual steering locks. I did not recall that my automatic did not.
