Hoist to lift Rear Cargo Cover

I have contacted a mfg'r of hoists for removable tops and asked if he would be interested in designing and mfg'ng a hoist/harness system that would allow a single person to remove and store (up against the ceiling) the rear Cargo cover. He seems "kinda interested". To encourage him, I thought it would be interesting to know how many of you would be interested in such a rig. The cost is unknown.....but based on his other stuff, I would guess in the 200-250 range. His other systems are top notch and I have used them on other vehicles. If interested....vote here.

Thanks
JES

( You are acutally talking about the cargo cover. On this truck, for whatever reason, GM called the small top storage compart area lid the tonneau cover....just thought you'd like to know.)

I think it is confusing too because everyone else (And I mean everyone ) calls the cover over the truck bed a tonneau......except for the SSR

The company I have contacted take pains to insure that what they design will work for the specific job without any worrry about damaging the cover (except of course for those of us who emulate "Murphy").

I thought about "buying similiar" and trying to modify it myself, but I would rather have someone who is an expert do the design if possible and affordable. Anyway, if a few people are interested to make it worth his while....great....if not, then I will try to modify something myself.

WOW, you are correct in your statement about the tonneau cover. In the old days the canvas cover that covered the convertible top when in the down position on the model T's was the tonneau cover.
In these modern days it has kind of got mis-called as the bed covers on pickup trucks! Our flipper door on our SSR's (sometimes called) that goes up to store our hard top is the real tonneau cover.
I use to get confused too.

Question take it off? take it all off?

i enjoy the ease and security provided by the back cargo cover that the SSR has. After seeing all the threads about difficulties with lift struts going bad and also looking at the hinge set up in the back im wondering if u might be opening "pandora's box" by trying to remove and replace that relatively heavy piece of steel. If i need to haul something bigger than i can put in the SSR I fire up the "beater",toss the item in back and down the road i go. Just adjusting that top cover to get it to seal correctly seems like it would be more difficult that it would be worth. Just a thought

It's actually designed so that you can remove and then put it back on without changing it's alignment to the SSR. So no adjustment necessary.

...

I would like to see what they come up with.
It's one of those things you would not use all the time, but need when you do remove the cover.
I would like to take cover off some times not for work, but just to change the look.

I Am Interested

I have checked with Top/Cap EZ Lift in Santa Clarita, California. This is where my brother bought his lift for his T-Bird. They are cheaper than EZ Top here in Houston.

Top Cap EZ Lift is interest in making one for the SSR but needs pictures or a real SSR.

The problem is the Bed Cover has to be lifted at an angle (open position). It has to move back an inch and then up. This is a challange fo a manual lift but might be easier for a motorized one.

Putting back on will require lining up the slots on both sides dropping in place, and moving it forward an inch.

I have the bed rail kit so I have my bed cover off more than most SSR owners.

I'm not interested ... but could somebody tell me how much does the tonneu weigh? Mine got the carpet so I'm guessing that another 35 - 45 lbs to add to a bare tonneu.

Tonneau cover

I was born and raised in New Jersey many years ago, make that many, many years ago. We never had a word like "tonneau". I would just like to know how to pronounce this word. Sounds like something you would find at Victorias Secret. Why not call it what it is a "boot cover" or "rumble seat area".

RUN ROD RUN,
I've had the top off a couple of times. It's not particularily heavy (probably about 60 - 70 lbs), but it is very awkward to try to manuever it by yourself. With two people it's pretty straight forward and easy to get off/on. Juts be careful when putting it back on as the corners tend to want to ding the top rails of the bed.

Well of course here comes that old saying......."pictures, we need pictures"
Wow, glad to get that out of the way!

(I was contemplating removing my cover this past weekend, but I found that the entertainment center had wheels and I just pushed it the 1/2 block down the street)
