Does anyone know what the hood struts are pressured to? I tried a search but all I see is discussion on the rear cover pressures. I was thinking of going a little lighter as I think I see a little bending on the fender tabs on my 05.

Thanks in advance,
I use a little silicone wiped on the shafts of all my struts front and back it seems to keep everything operating a little smoother
I own an '04 and the installation of the front struts is low on my to do list.
My concern relates to the earlier comment about the lower ( I think ) mounting tabs on the fender either bending or causing the fender to bend.
Don't get me wrong, this may or may not be a problem of the kit manufacturer; it could very well be a GENUINE GM problem from the start. If the fenders/tabs are too weak, the issue of pressure in the shocks is not important; ie, the fender/tab mounting point may simply not be adequatly designed to support the weight of the hood itself in the static open position.
I do not know what kit you installed but the one I used had backing washers. The bracket was designed to mount back under the fender with two attachment spots which formed a ridged mount. I have no flex.
Seen's how we are talking struts here does anybody have some advice on changing the rear deck struts. I bought the new ones from Steve and I see how the clip comes off but looks to be hard to push back on. I guess I'm looking for suggestions from chaps what have already done this soas maybe I won't screw things up. Greg & Grimm

I get along fine without them so far, and think I will be able to open the hood sans struts for a long time to come!
FWIW,

We will see how you feel when the guy doing your oil change or the mechanic at the dealer forgets that you don't have struts and bends your prop when shutting the hood....just pointing out what has happended to many others. I've had the prop and the hood blanket replaced (the blanket because the hood prop ripped it as it bent).

To install the struts I would leave the clip on the strut. Just place a small screw driver under the clip in one of the two slots and pry up enough that the clip ends pull back from mount hole. Then just side over ball and pull the screwdriver out the clips snap in place. I put mine on the cargo area from out side the box. (I’m 6’3”)
The stainless set are even eazyer, they use a pin through hole then you swing pin sideways to clip.

Thanks for all the discussion ..... as mentioned in the first post above, my SSR is an 05 so the struts are stock, there was no kit installed. There is just a slight bend on one of the tabs, might have been caused by something else as I have not owned it since new. For those curious I found out that the stock pressure on the hood struts are 43 lbs. I might get some slightly lower pressure ones that have locks on the piston so that it stays where I put it, then again I might stay with the stock pressure and just build up the mounting tab a little.
The stock ones are getting rather sticky and that is the reason for replacement. I've tried exercising them off the vehicle quite a few times to lube the piston but it's not working ..... if anyone is tossing their good stock ones for stainless replacements I might be interested in them, shoot me a PM please.

I have an '05 and the pressure it takes to close the hood is considerable. In fact it feels like the hood could buckle like a dogged out old Chevelle. If you find struts that keep the hood open, but require less force than stock to close, I'd sure be interested in the part numbers.

deck struts
The new ones from Stephen, has two difference ends. The cylinder end is like Rebel shows, but the small end is difference. Turn it over so you are looking at the back side `not the side where the ball goes. There is a plastic top on it. You take a small screwdriver and insert it in one of four slots under the cap and gently pry up. Then go around and do each of the slot and the cap cames right off. Turn it over and slip it on the ball and reinsert the cap and push it all the way in. This locks the fingers around the ball. If you have any questions PM me as I just got throught putting the hood and the deck cylinders on from LST. (Stephen)
As I found out when we purchased a used 99 Street Rod Golf Cart. We bought it last year and with only the 6 years on the struts that pop the little hood up, where there is a storage area, they are too weak to pop the hood up enough to grasp it without digging your nails into the seam.
Soooooooooooooo, I went down to the local shop where I purchased the Cart and asked for a price on a Strut. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, OUCH!!!!!!
was quoted 90 bucks each!!
We decided to just tough it out, like grin and bear it!
Nope, I will stay with lifting the hood.
Yes I guess I risk the danger of some ding bat damaging something while it is being lubed but, I believe, they would be responsible for the damage anyhow.

Hamc, I have some parts coming to me in the mail as we speak, when I find a solution it will be discussed as I think this is an issue that many of us will have if not already. My 05 only has 3500 miles and the struts are already shot with the same issue as you mention. I cringe when I have to open or close the hood. Anyway, stay tuned for another post with findings and solutions.
