Hot Passenger area
Since a lot of you lucky people just completed either the HRPT or Springfield Ralley, I have a question.
The other day the Wife and I had a road trip to North/West Illinois for the week end and the air temp was around 95. On the road about 1 hour 30 and the Wife was complaining on how hot is was on the tranny hump and floor board area of the passenger seat. She picked up her purse and the bottom was to hot to hold onto. She opened the purse to find her lip balm and lipstick had started to melt.
To finish the trip, she had to put a towel on the floor and stick her feet up on the dash. With all this heat, nothing appeared to be out of the normal in any operational modes for the R. The dirver side was warm, but no way as hot as the passenger side.
On the way home, we experianced the same air temps and traffic. The tranny tunnel and floor boards where no way as hot as they where on the way up North.
Has anyone else had this excessive heat on the passenger side of the R?

Just finished 3699 miles, and neither of us noticed this issue with the SSR. Had a similar problem with each of our Corvettes (before sacrificing them to the SSR addiction).

Heated Pasenger floor
I used to have the same issue. I solved it by installing the DEI (P/N 050503) Floor and Tunnel Shield on the OUTSIDE of the floor, above the exhaust system. The passenger side gets hot because of the cat converter and exhaust plumbing that is directly below. This material stopped it cold.
Here's a link to the material I used. I bought it through Jeg's for about $100 and installed it myself with only a sharp pair of scissors. the material has a "very aggressive adhesive" that is designed to be used on the bottom of the vehicle. This is the same stuff that you will find (in little patches) on the firewall, just near the exhaust pipe.

Mike, Do you think this material would help if I lined the deck lid with it so the rear compartment wouldn't get so hot as I don't have carpet back there?
It sure sounds as though all of you guys had a GREAT time in SF.
Im sitting here and wondering what (or who?) Bruce is carrying in the Yellow Tub
in the rear compartment area that he has to be concerned about heat? Do you live near
the border area there Bruce? Im in Michigan so any Canadians i sneak over actually enjoy what heat i can provide in the back!
This happened to me. Passenger side floor board got so hot it melted wife's lip stick in her purse.Warrenty work. They replaced Y- pipe with converters and instaled auxiliary shields. Also replaced 2 oxygen sensors that threads stripped out on removal from old Y-pipe.

Hpoe this helps. jgssr , John Garner,
Do you have the gauge package that tells how hot your trans is? If so how hot is it . Or is your engine making the heat . My wife has never said anything about the heat issue. But I did have a problem with truck over heating. The dealer changed something & its never happened again. Good luck with your over heating problem. I hope you get it fixed.

Just Got Home From The Dealer
hadWell I took the R into the dealer today for the excessive heat problem and boy was the dealer shocked along with myself.
The R went on the lift and the tech, service writer, and myself looked under the R for any signs of heat damamge. They checked the TSB's and nothing showed up on the R.
So they called the GM hotline and that is when everyone got upset. The GM tech line person asked a few questions and one was if the exhaust had been modified and the tech working on the R, told the GM tech that it had been changed from the Cat back to a larger flow exhaust. At that time the GM tech dropped the assistance and told the dealer tech that he had nothing else to say and or advise for the dealer tech.
The dealer tech tried to keep the GM tech envolved, but he was done talking any sugguestions because the exhaust had been changed. Althought the change did not effect the problem area, the GM tech was done talking about the problem
Personally, the three of us thought that the GM tech's actions was a cheap I don't care. The Service Writer and Dealer Tech was going to talk to the dealership field tech and see what he can do.
All the heat shield where in place. No excessive heat damage to the Cats was noted, and the problem has not duplicated itself since that day.
