How do I remove the tailgate?

OK Fellow Fanatics,

I know lately I have been asking many questions, but I have searched pretty heartily and I cannot find this answer. As the second owner, I took my SSR with the custom rear emblems that the previous owner has installed. Now I want to make it my own, and I have two new emblems that I need to have mounted. The problem is that the previous owner had a VERY large "V" mounted & drilled at a very low point on the tailgate with a "Chevrolet" script in the tailgate center.

Now, I have to have the holes filled at a body shop, and the whole gate painted. Since the SSR is not driveable now (or anytime soon since it is still bad weather here) I want to remove the tailgate and bring it to the paint shop. Problem is, I am stumped. I have removed the carpet , handle, and old emblems, but am unsure how to procede and remove that actual tailgate.

Anyone do this themselves? I am kind of screwed if I can't do it myself. Help me please! Thank you!

thom

Hmmm that got me wondering. Walked out to the garage and took a look at mine. Looks like you remove the support cable and 2 torx head bolts per side. Then the tailgate should slide off over the hinges. Dont know about the 3rd brakelight wires though. Looks like a 2-man job. But if I didnt have a second pair of hands, I'd cover the bumper with a blanket or something. Prevent any tailgate to bumper contact. Torx bit size is " T40 "

Very easy.

The hinges are like arms on both sides of the tailgate that go inside the tailgate. The fasteners are torx head, 2 on each outer side of the tailgate and are painted the same color as your truck. Basically the same with the support cables, if I'm not mistaken they are 1/2". You undo those 3 fasteners on each side and it slides right out.

You'll also have to find a junction in the wire to the brake light in the center of the tailgate. The wire runs along the upper LH tailgate hinge under a plactic clip. I just cut mine right in the middle and spliced it back together when I reinstalled it.

Hope this helps.

We're here to help, ALWAYS!

I'd like to see what the previous owner did with that "V" and script. Of course we'd also love to see your new creation when it's completed.

Do you have photos that you'd care to share or can send me via email?

Thanks, Mike

If the answers above do not do it for you I would suggest a PM to Umpire13 since he has been involved with replacing tailgates in the past.

Mike,
I was so gung-ho to remove it, I neglected to take any pictures of it installed! I can however put it back on for a quick photo, so i will do that. It was a Danchuk Manufacturing "V" and "Chevrolet" script in gold, that I thought looked pretty weird with the chrome and silver theme of the truck. If it is too expensive to redo the tailgate, I may just replace them with chrome Danchuk parts and be done with it.

At any rate, i will take pics and post them asap.

And BTW everyone, thank you for the help! I thought it may be as easy as the torx screws, but was afraid that once I got it unscrewed, it would be the wrong thing to have done! Thanks!

Thom.

I was in the same boat.

It's so easy even a Flatlander from the Canadian Prairies could get his off and back on, in sub zero temperatures. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Here is a picture of Thom's gate as it was.
I remember Ed saying it was a bit of a feat to get the V located so low on the gate but don't recall why.

Thanks Cash! Save me the trouble!

It was hard to get it off too! I had to have my 10 year old son reach into the tailgate in order to get to the bolts, as my arms are too big to fit!

Anyway, as I said, if I cannot have it redone at a reasonable price, I will be reinstalling them in chrome, which would better match the rest of the truck!

I have two emblems that I want to use, and they will be able to be swapped out pretty easily when the ood suits me. Keeping my fingers crossed it will work out!

Thumbs up Thanks for the picture!

Why so low... because of the curvature of the sheetmetal and the inner support structure.

Post your tailgate. There should be a thread for tail gate treatments.

I have a NOS Chevy Corvair front emblem (large chrome wings with old school chevy emblem interior)

I also have NOS Chevy Nova 63 trunk emblem (chrome bar with "CHEVROLET" letters on top)

I will snap a pic and post it later tonight.
