If Your Aux. Volt Meter is Pegging 16V or Close Look Here..

I read a thread here saying that they had a problem with there Aux cluster reading high (15.5-16++) on the charge side with the motor running being due to a bad battery. Well they are RIGHT ON. I just had my battery changed out and my Volt meter is now reading 14.5V. Its the Battery Baby not the cluster!! This quirk could also be helpful knowing when the battery is about to go south.

But when I had my cluster changed it solved the problem also without changing the battery.
As a side note, a few months later I noticed that the battery had very little reserve. Once or twice with the roof without the engine running and it went dead. Had it checked and they replaced it N/C. A lot of these trucks sat in showrooms for awhile and had the batteries damaged during roof demos.

Dealer Service Department said once the battery is drained a couple of times its shot and never recovers to take a full charge again.

So what should we be checking in this regard? Charging rate? Battery?

Mine pegs as well, but I usually get a more accurate reading with the key on BEFORE starting the engine.

I found my Volt meter pegging 16V before the battery was changed. Dealer said its because the Alt is trying to compensate for the battery being bad.

I was wondering about mine. When I saw mine for the first time in the dealership the battery was dead and probably for quite a while. The voltmeter in my cluster also runs high, nearly 16 if not 16. It's done that since I bought it. The battery has never had any problems. However I only start it. I have never tried to lower the top without it running. How could I check my battery to determine if it is bad or going bad. I guess I could verify the voltage with a meter, to see if it is the gauge.

My guage reads 15.5-16.0 volts anytime the motor is running. i just returned from the dealer who read the output at the computer connection with the motor running....read 13.2 volts....I guess I have a gauge problem????

This could go either way-battery or gauge. Proper troubleshooting is key. My 05 had a bad gauge (pegged at 16v all the time) and cluster had to be changed-battery is still cranking fine and gauge is reading correct and it's been 3 months.

Exclamation Mickey Mouse Voltmeter guage

I just changed my battery to an Optima (see thread this page) but the mickey mouse voltmeter guage still pegs to 15+. However, with the key on, not engine started, the guage settles in at 13+...which is correct. I am going to blame the guage since my battery is new. I replaced the Delco because I don't trust it when I am a long way from anything!!!

Mine was sitting at just about 16. The alternator made a noise at WOT and the dealer replaced it on my 05. Now the gauge sits at 14.5 with the engine running. Go figure.

Volt meter issues?

I hear various members saying they change cluster? I know one thing the
temperature gauge is a piece of junk! They should of put a picture of Mickey Mouse
in there! If it is 80degrees outside, gauge is 5-10 degrees off or more?! I wish
they would have offered the temp in mirror option on 05MY.Every car I have owned for the last five plus years has had an O/S temp. reading.I know it's a Hot Rod,but we do get spoiled you know! Do you think the inferior gauges in the cluster are affecting the draw on the voltmeter?

My gauges are all right on the money. Digital temp matches analog, volts is cool at 14.5 and torque works just fine. Thanks for the heads up & all the good info on what to watch out for!

About 5 months ago my volt meter and temp gauges pegged all the way to the right. I took it to the dealer and they put all new gauges in and they now all work just fine. Battery always feels strong but I never open or close the top unless the engine is running. I figure why push it.
