At 23K, I just may be experiencing intermittant ignition switch failure with my 05, born 12/15/04. I did a very brief search, but would anyone provide a quick link to best thread directing me to the info most suited my circumstance.
Specifically, I need to know if my SSR was among the group of GM vehicles that received the malfunctioning switches.
My 05,born sept 04 has had the ignition switch problem and i now carry an extra on board along with directions on replacement. I agree i dont think its a specific group or year-it seems ive heard problems with vehicles from all four years of production.

Ditto on that!!!!!
I have a spare on board and put together a 1" manual of all important documents that stays behind the passenger seat of the
So, I'm interpreting from your responses that a new switch would not be a new improved design, but the same old design with same propensity to failure. No TSB on this?
If I have to take my SSR into the dealer to have a new switch put in, I need to know where on my vehicle the technician hooks up his diagnostic gysmo to read my computer. I need to put a tag on it warning him not to reflash my custom tune.
part # for the ignition switch is 15242754 I believe this is the re-designed #. Someone have time and want to check Old posts by Mike in AZ to confirm this, be my guest.
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
2. Disable the SIR system.
3. Remove the hush and knee bolster. .
4. Remove the steering column trim covers.
5. With the key installed, turn the key to the RUN position.
6. Install an allen wrench into the hole on top of the lock cylinder housing.
Push down on the allen wrench to release the tab on the lock cylinder inside the lock cylinder housing.
7. Slide the lock cylinder out of the lock cylinder housing.
8. Disconnect the passlock and key buzzer from the lock cylinder housing.
9. Insert J 42759 into the lock cylinder housing to release the tabs on the ignition switch.
10. Pull the ignition switch out of the lock cylinder housing.
11. Disconnect the connector from the ignition switch.
Installation Procedure
Important: The gears between the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing must be in the correct position. Failure to do so will cause a misalignment of the gears in the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing, which may result in a NO START or BATTERY DRAIN.
1. Verify the alignment of the gear (1) in the ignition switch (2). If gear (1) is not in position shown, turn gear in ignition switch (2) until you reach the correct position.
Important: In order to reach a stop while rotating the lock cylinder housing gear you MUST push and hold in the solenoid on the electric park lock.
2. Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear counterclockwise until it hits a stop.
3. Connect the connector to the ignition switch.
4. Insert the ignition switch into the lock cylinder housing. The tabs (2) on the ignition switch MUST be seated inside the lock cylinder housing (1) for proper installation.
5. Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear clockwise to the START position - allowing it to spring return into the RUN position.
6. Align the lock cylinder and install the lock cylinder into the lock cylinder housing.
7. Connect the passlock and key buzzer into the lock housing.
8. Install the steering column trim covers. .
9. Enable the SIR system.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
You want it with pretty pictures and in color, PM your email.

How do you disable the SIR, and what does SIR stand for?
So, I take it that pulling the air bag fuse takes care of the SIR issue entirely. How tricky is it to get the knee bolsters and steering column cover disengaged?

It not difficult to remove, but it does take some pressure to pull it down. Remember to ease it forward (once it's loose) to clear the flange that's under the steering wheel.
If you want somepics fromour tech sesion PM me and I'll send you a link to some.
