Inside door handle
When Ann got home yesterday her drivers door wouldn't open from the inside. I figured it was a broken handle and took it in today for a warranty repair. They fixed it and said it was not the handle broken but 2 plastic clips on the actuator rod. Just a heads up in case this happens to you. I feel stupid paying $100 deductable for 2 plastic clips. Guess I should have taken off the door panel and looked before I assumed it was a broken handle.
It's good news that the handle wasn't broken, but bad news about your deductible. Well there is always the problem when you assume. Think about the gas that could have bought.

Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.
On the third anniversary of buying my SSR, my driver's door stopped opening from inside the car. I need to open the window and use the outside door handle to open the door.
I'm out of the warranty period and so I want to fix it my self. Does anyone have the part numbers for the plastic clips that was mentioned as the problem? Will the dealer sell these to me? or will they want to install them?
Also, since this seems to be a common problem does anyone know if maybe GM is fixing it free for those out of warranty?
I've got to pull the inside door panel using the directions provided on this site to really determine what is broke. Is there anything else that could also be broke that I should look for?
I had the same problem with my 05. There is a TSB on this problem and mine was fixed under warranty. the TSB says to replace BOTH sides when one side breaks. I will be at work tomorrow and will be able to send anyone the TSB if they want. It gives all the details.

Contact RSSRTOY or BYERS. I ordered 4 sets from RSSRTOY a while back and got them within a week.

Inside Door Handle
Very seldom the " DOOR HANDLE" Will Break. It is made of metal , What breaks is the inside Plastic mounting bracket ( on the back side of the trim panel).:smash
I understand that the TSB for the inside door handle no longer operating falls under a "safety" issue of operating the car.
If that's the case, then will Chevy fix the problem for free, even if your SSR is no longer under warranty?
Is there anyone with knowledge of a manufacturer's responsibility and what the dealer will do under that condition?
Thanks
Carl

Update:
Talked to one dealer today. The TSB for the 04 SSR states that the handle and bezel breaks. It's not a safety issue and they don't cover it for free. However, since I'm just past the warranty time he might be able to do something. Also, the TSB doesn't say to two both doors and some others do, so they would only do the broken door. Also, the fix is a new door handle and bezel even if it might be some other internal part. The door handle comes a complete unit for $116 and you can't buy just a individual piece that is broken. So you get everything even though you only need a small piece.
They don't cover TSB's for free out of warranty.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

It's the same TSB and doesn't change anything I wrote about, except that yours says to do both doors. It also doesn't say anything about it being a safety issue, which I was told it does. I went to the dealer yesterday and he insisted that it doesn't say to do both doors. The TSB I pulled from the website: 2004 CHEVROLET SSR Technical Service Bulletins
doesn't say anything about doing both doors either. When I go back I'll get him to show me the offical GM TSB and clear up the matter.
He did order the fix for one door, the one that's broke. I guess I should have been clearer but in my earlier posts did say I was out of warranty and they don't do TSB's for free out of warranty, in warranty, yes they do. I called GM/Chevy customer service and they are looking into doing something about the cost of the repair, but first they have to talk to the dealer. The dealer thinks they might allow it as a warranty item but I may have to pay a deductable. He insisted that GM does spot check the parts he sends back under warranty (which he's trying to do for me), and if GM finds that parts he sends back are not broke they'll bitch, and maybe not pay him back, so he's not going to do the other door too, as I asked him to do.
I'll post more as I get this resolved, which won't be until next week.
Carl
Update:
I checked other sites including NTSA and all that list the TSB don't say anything about replacing both handles.
However, I received an actual copy of the TSB - 05-08-64-026, from an SSRfanatic member. and yes it does say replace both door handles!
I'm bringing a copy to my dealer.
I believe it's somewhere on this site too: check for "door%20handle%20bezel-072000-070957[1].pdf"

Reason: Correction
Finally got both door handles replaced by the dealer.
The dealer said the TSB didn’t mean that Chevy had to do no matter what, it wasn’t a safety issue. It wasn’t a recall, and since I was out of warranty they didn’t have do it under warranty. If you were still under warranty they would certainly do the repair. Also, the dealer said the TSB didn’t say to do both doors when one breaks.
Everywhere I looked on the TSB, I couldn’t find anything saying to do both doors when one fails. Finally, I was able to get an actual GM copy and it did say to do both doors.
I called Chevy Customer service and they sang the same tune and said I had to bring it to a dealer for any consideration for making any adjustment in payment for the fix. I felt that this is a known defect and Chevy should fix all that need it for free. I brought it to the dealer before I found the actual GM TSB. The dealer said the TSB didn’t say to do both doors when one fails and I told him that I was told that the TSB did say do both doors.
The dealer said I was out of warranty, but usually they would charge something like a $50 deductible and do the one door that was broken. I said fine lets go ahead and at least get the broken door fixed. I found the copy of the TSB and brought it to the dealer. He agreed to do both doors, he either missed the line about the two doors or he had an older version of the TSB.
Meanwhile I was talking to Chevy customer service and giving the flack about them not fixing a known defect and safety concern. They said they talked to the dealer and felt that if I agreed to the $50 deductible, that was all that they were going to do and they were closing out the complaint I had.
When I picked the car up, a thunderstorm had just started and I wanted to get home quickly to wipe the car down. I didn’t have time to talk much to the dealer. They just pulled the work order and said the car was ready, no charges and they did both doors. I wasn’t going to argue about that so I left as it started raining.
I don’t know exactly what happened, but I got the fix for both doors at no charge and was out the warranty period. The work order did say no charge as it was fixed under warranty. I was not going to question it.
The next major item I see that seems to be coming up a lot that is similar is the ignition switch. I wonder what Chevy is going to do about that? I hope mine doesn’t break.
Ignition switch replacement is not that big a deal. Labor should be only about 1 hour (if you have it down rather than doing it yourself) and the switch is less than $30.

While I like your attempt to save your door handles from breakage, I don't think it's really going to stop it from breaking.
I understand thats it's the plastic parts internally that will fail and your lubrication it not going to stop it. It's probably the number of times the door is used (opened and closed) that will determine how fast it will break, although it's been reported low mileage cars break too. However, it does seem that the drivers side fails more often first than the passenger door leads you to think again it's the usage.
