4:56 rear gear with 5.3 auto gets instant 22mpg on cruise, set at 70 mph on flat road with no wind.
Hard to believe but with only 163 fun miles (stop/start stuff) after resetting average gas mileage, it’s better than my average for all last year. (15.6)
It will be interesting to get some miles with cruise set at 70mph mixed in with more fun miles, to see where the average rises to.

I just jumped into the conversation on the gear change... so if I caught you right, a change to the 4:56 gear nets more MPG and snappier starts? What's the downside beside new tires quicker?
There is one down side, but only on the 05-06's don't like 456 gears your speedo will be off and it will clock wrong mileage also..
But:: PCMFORLESS.COM :: see or call Bryan and he will tune it and your going to be right on with all. Speeedo, mileage, and his tune is hot too..
Had the PCM & TCM back in 2 days paying extra for over night shipping and same on the return run also. took me about 20 mins to reinstall and was gone down the road..

I AGREE WITH REBEL, LOVE MY 4:56. WAKES THE TRUCK UP. THE ONLY DOWN SIDE IF YOU WANT TO CALL IT THAT, IS GETTING USE TO THE HIGHER RPMS WHILE CRUSING. BUT WHAT THE HAY, IT IS SO MUCH MORE FUN YOU GET SO THAT YOU DON'T EVEN NOTICE THE RPMS. NOW COUPLE THIS WITH GREG'S SERVO AND EVEN AT HALF THROTTLE, YOU WILL GET A NICE CHIRP WHEN IT SHIFTS INTO SECOND. OH WHAT A RIDE, OH WHAT A RIDE. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING UNTIL YOU TRY IT. MACHELL, IF YOU ARE UNDECIDED, LETS GET TOGETHER AND I'LLGIVE YOU A TEST RIDE IN MIND AND YOU CAN JUDGE IF THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT. JUST LET ME KNOW.

May as well go for the gusto Machell. It's not like the 4.56 is radical. It's better than the 3.73 but not psycho or hairy. Now that we found pcmforless can calibrate the speedo (for a mere $250.00) I would recommend anyone to go for the 4.56.

MACHELL, ALSO MY SUPERCHIP DOES THE GEAR CHANGE AND ALSO VARIANCE IN TIRE HEIGHT, AND YOU CAN FLIP FLOP BACK AND FORTH ON TUNES FOR GAS SAVINGS ON REAL LONG TRIP AND WHEN YOU GET THERE JUST CHANGE IT TO PERFORMANCE TUNE, I REALLY LIKE MINE.

WILDCAT If your going to pay for a performance mod, why not get the change you will feel the biggest bang doing. The SSR feels like you lost 1,000lbs, along with Greg's servo thats cost is so little, and then a good tune PCMFORLESS did a awesome job on my SSR fixing the speedo, and your there.
And hes right your tires will chirp or spin hitting second gear and mines an auto, thats what I like the best, peoples eyes open wide when they see and hear that.. Go for it..

Try to find you you can take a ride in a 4:56 truck to feel the difference from stock. Make sure you can live with the higher RPM at highway speeds. Bottom end performance will be awesome, and the auto takes care of the shifting for you.
I went with 4:10s on the 6 speed - I thought the 4:56s would have me shifting a lot more in city cruising, with a really short first gear.
Either way, it's a lot of extra kick in the butt for pretty low dollars.

My SSR: 03. Custom paint. Flowmaster 40, lake pipes, 4.56's, torque converter, Vette servo, Bosal tips.
Machell, I agree with everyone else. My 4.56's with the servo, converter and a tune makes my R fly. Like she went on Jenny Craig! Second gear chirp is music to my ears. I'm in heaven.
You will loose gas mileage with the gears.
But you also need to recalibrate your Speedo after the gear change, which you do with a tuner flash.
In my case a SCT Flash. http://www.sctflash.com/product_gm_xc2.php
This flash unit, comes with up to 3 tunes as set by your dealer. Like for three different octane levels.
It is with this 89 octane tune that has special tweaking by the tuner, I get chirp chirp and 22mpg at 70 mph. Lovin it
WILDCAT ... Brenda can not tell the difference in rear gear sound nor I, with the american axle gears set at 5 thou.
It will sound different which is the higher rpm. Be a wildcat not a fraddy cat

The gears cost you more gas.
The tune gets the gas back.
Think how many tailpipes have you seen black with the factory tune ... thats wasted gas ,that the tune gets back.

What kind of impact did the 4.56s have on driveability and MPGs? I've got a 6-speed with SC and am craving more push. Is the shorter 1st gear a bit of a pain? I saw an earlier post where someone claimed about the same 1/4 mile times between 4.11 and 4.56 (due to more tire spin with the 4.56)

Availability of the 4:56 gears for a 6 speed is an issue. Couldn't find a set of American Axle gears, and didn't get great recommendations on a Korean gearset that's available.
I do a lot of small town driving. After installing 4:10s, I'm really happy with overall performance, and thrilled with highway performance. I cruised in 4th with the stock gears. 5th is now a useable gear at highway speeds, and 6th is still an overdrive. You would probably get great highway performance in 6th with the 4:56, but before making that jump, you should drive an SSR with the 4:56 gearset to see if the 1st to 2nd shifts would wear you out after a whle.

ok, i'm putting my 20-22's on and thinking of selling my factory chrome wheels and tires to do a gear change and tune.......question 1- 4:10-4:56 for my 6speed?
question2-where an i get them? question3- do i send my computer out before i do gears or during install?.....i dont know of anyone in my area thats doing tunes so i'll ship to pcmforless.......or do i buy an aftermarket tune?

the first - second shift arrives quickly, I don't think 456's are necessary.
I don't know what it felt like with the 373's as I bought mine from Joe (2005SSR6Speed) with the gear change done.
Joe said he liked it as well before (I personally like the way my ssR will idle around in a parking lot and how responsive it is cruising on the freeway with the lower gears)
maybe you should do something else, like a 90mm throttle body and kooks headers.
give Joe a call, I'm sure he can give you some good advice

The 4.56 is very driveable. I shift as much as I did without it, just a little faster 1st to 2nd. The truck is not squirelly, not radical, not scarey at all with the 4.56. My gas mileage is 21mpg. in 6th crusin' with 2,000 rpm's. Around town if I'm drivin' nice I get about 14mpg.... although that's rare. It's usually less. Get the gear and get Bryan Herter @ pcmforless to give you a tune and I would think you'll be gettin' that kick you so desire. Yes, he can tune it before you install the gear. I can't vouch for the 4.56 with a supercharger... Mike has a good point about maybe asking 2005SSR6SPEED about that gear and s/c combo, although I believe Jim Gnitecki is running 4.56 supercharged. Send them both a pm and see what they say...
And so far as tire spin, I've learned to not dump the clutch at 6,500 rpms... at least not after I've driven through the water pit...

What has been your experience with gas mileage with these gears and the 6 speed??
Thanks
