Unhappy Kenwood Dnx5120 & Battery Drain

Online
I had a DNX5120 professionally installed in my 2004 Chevy SSR on 5/6/2008. Since that time, I have had endless problems with the battery draining. The Chevy dealer alleges that all is well with the vehicle and point to the "after market" radio/nav system as the likely problem. The install tech has not been able to find any problems with the DNX5120. HELP! Anyone out there experienced similar problems??? If so, what was the fix?

BTW...I have changed out the battery and continue to have the problem.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated...SSR2SM

Is there a way to isolate the kenwood from the electrical system; ie disconnect wires and/or fuses? It may require multiple disconnects but if your problem persists, you'll be able to lay it on Chevrolet.

Are you using any of the OEM harnesses to maintain the door chime and the function of the radio buttons on the steering wheel???

Try changing out the ignition switch. Lots of strange electrical problems and gremlins seem to dissappear when you do. Just a thought and they are relativly inexpensive.

I have a Kenwood and have not had any of these issues. i think the techs must have done something to a lead wire...

Thanks for the input. How inexpensive is "relatively inexpensive?"

Would help to install a yellow top optima, ask SSR03, he had the same problems you are having and that cured it, but he did change ignition switch as well ($24 for switch and 20 minutes of your time, fairly simple change).

the battery is expensive however, but worth it from what SSR03 says. I have the red top optima battery and it drains occassionaly if I don't drive/start the SSR for awhile. Just got a battery tender I am going to hook up to prevent the drains.

I had the same draining problem on my 04 With an Optima Yellow top (yellow top was dead!! after a year of battery tender charges). GM refused to replace my ignition switch so I had a standard battery installed and I'm back to draining. I plan have the ignition switch replaced now that it is still draining. Dealer says they never heard of ignition switch problems having worked on 800 plus SSR's. Surprised I'm not

Thanks for the info. Please keep me posted on whether or not the ignition switch solves the problem. Thanks, again!

Hi

I have a 06 with the 5120 Kenwood, using the extra controls to have the steering wheel controls and all the chimes working. I had an issue about 2 weeks ago in the morning on start up the volt meter was all the way to the end of the scale and vibrating off the end. I found that in about 5 minutes the volt meter dropped to about 15 volts. Then the auto head lights went off and then the volt meter when to 13.5 or 14 and all was ok. This happen several times and we pulled of the wire from the alternator and the meter would also go back to normal. Had it into the dealer and they said they tested the system with guess what NO PROBLEMS. This may have been from the radio draining the battery?? enough that the alternator was working to full charging capacity, and the regualtor in the alternator not working?? If anyone has had this problem please send me a thread.

Thank you for your response. When I first started having problems, the volt meter fluctuated between 12 & 14.5 regularly. I even took some digital photos to show the dealer. They, too, kind of shined it on saying that there were no problems with the vehicle, while generously throwing the "A-word" (Aftermarket) around implying that the 5120 is the problem. I have not seen the volt meter dip below 13 in 6-weeks or so. Let's hope one of us can get to the bottom of this soon! I will keep everyone posted on my progress (or lack thereof).

It is COMMON for the voltmeter to fluctuate as you describe. Mine has done it since new and they even changed the meter under warranty to make sure. Chevy says it is normal operation, as components pull load,. I will say that my new one (now has 38000 miles on it) does not jump around as much and even less since I changed batteries and ignition switch.

Following a couple of days in the shop, the Kenwood dealer surmised that the delayed shut down of the unit was failing intermittently (the delay function caused the unit to shut down when the door was opened rather than when the ignition was turned off). He has bypassed the delay so the unit shuts down as soon as the ignition is shut off. No battery drain while sitting in the shop for 48-hours!

Hey hows it going. I installed a gps into an SSR yesterday no problems it was an AVIC Z3 though. Which harness did you get installed, did you use a door chime mod or bose intergration harness? Did you install steering wheel control adps? If so there is a couple wire that people can mess up causing the radio to drain the bat. If you need any help and you are in the bay area, ca let me know. If you have any question feel free to pm me. Have a good on and gl
