leaking differential

Hello all looking for some input I have an 05 with an automatic. The tubes on the rear end are leaking where they join the housing, the tubes are cast with the housing being aluminium. My dealer is reluctant to warrnty this, a new housing assembly is $4k! anybody else had this happen, no way to weld cast to aluminium is there?

I had to send mine to a shop to have repaired I had a bent housing. They had the housing completely apart and back together. So far I have no leaks. A new housing list for somewhere around $2300 if I remember correctly.

I dont understand how the dealer is reluctant. If there is no way you could have damaged those areas, how can he say it is not a warranty issue?

I've got a '2000 GMC Sierra I bought new. At around 12,000 miles the same thing happened. The dealer repaired it by removing the axle tubes and replacing them, all on warranty.

As Focks stated earlier, there is NO reason this is not a warranty item (unless you are into rock crawling with your SSR).

Go up the ladder to the service manager, pitch a fit if you have to, but don't take no for an answer.

I don't think it's a common problem. Haven't seen it on this forum. Also tried a search and came up empty.

i have never had that problem.. and if you can see cracks all along the sides its pretty obvious that someone tried a quick fix hoping no one would be the wiser.. take it up the ladder.

You could always clean the sealer off and go to another dealer. Sealer or not though, the axle should never leak through any part other than bad seals or stripped drain plugs.

I'm with 41Chevcoe on this one. It SOUNDS from your description like this vehicle had possibly been involved in an accident before it was sold to you used. Axle housings do not simply crack. They crack either because:

1. They were defectively made or assemblded in the first place, or

2. They received a heck of a shock somewhere.

I'd demand this be fixed as a safety issue.
