Lifter Noise on Startup

I'm not sure if this is peculiar to the 6 liter or not but I've noticed some lifter noise / clatter when I first start the engine. THis is a daily driver so it doesn't sit for long periods of time. My thought is that the valve lash adjustment is not quite what it should be since the hydraulic roller lifters should bleed down that much overnight. Haven't been to the dealer yet so I thought I could get some good info here first.

Mine has clattered on start up only when it sits for a week or so. Have not noticed it when if i drive it every few days. Ross

It might be an isolated problem but I think you just might be hearing the normal sounds of the LS1-LS2 motors. The tended to have some piston "slap" on cold morning start ups. I had a 2000 C5 with the LS1 and this was a common problem talked about on the C5 NET site. I didn't have as much problem as others but I never drove my C5 when it was cold out. I did however experience a bent push rod after I missed a 3-4 upshift at the local drag strip one night. I bumped the rev limiter when I missed 4th gear but on an upshift that should have protected the engine. It was very slight and the only reason I knwe what happend was the additional ticking sound from the valve train. No engine miss or lack of performance, just more noise. With only 2,600 miles on the car I was upset with myself to say the least (in went a new shifter!). The good news was the dealer took care of it without asking any questions but after that I was really afraid of mising a shift. Be VERY careful you don't grab the wrong gear on a downshift sometime - that causes physical over rev which can go much higher than the rev limiter protects from on an upshift. They might have addressed the weak push rods when the went from the LS1 to the LS2 but I'm not sure. Someone else might know more and I'll check the C6NET site to see if there is any news there.

My 2004 has a light tappet noise at idle (8500 miles). I spoke to the dealer and they said that GM considered that noise as NORMAL. The engine has a little rought idle, but they insist that it is excepted by GM as normal. Any Suggestions

05 no lifter noise on start up in cold or warm weather even when it sat idle for 3 months best get it loooooked AT

I've been waiting for someone to bring this up. I thought maybe only mine did it. Its not piston slap, its dry lifter clatter.

I wonder if its more prevalent than just you and me.

Its kind of scary to me.

Rough idle and tapping noise is not normal in the 04 with the 5.3. Take it to another dealer for a second opinion. "Its Normal" is dealer code for we don't want to spend time chasing your problem.

Mine ('05) has done this since new as well. I always assumed this was normal. I only hear it for a second or two. Since oil pressure always looked okay, I never gave it a second thought.

It is VERY normal and common on LS1 and 2 Corvettes. Go take a search at CorvetteForum.com Mine will clatter not always but sometimes. Put "tapping when cold" in the search window over at C/F.

You should use an oil filter that has a check valve in it. When and where did you have your oil changed? What filter did they use?

Just had the oil and filter changed at the dealership. They used their "Synthetic Oil Change" recommended for the SSR. They charged me for 7 quarts of oil and tore my underhood insulation cause the technician did not know how to attach a hood prop. This is my last visit to that dealership.

My truck is an '05 daily driver with 2,300 miles on it. Everything, including the filter is from the factory. I plan to keep it total GM stock with all work done by my dealer.

This has come up literally every other week over at GM-Trucks.com for the past few years. Every engine model in the Gen III/IV line has experienced lifter noise. Some worse than others. My truck (Silverado) certainly has it, and it's now got just over 75k miles but still runs like a champ. Oil quality and weight do affect how prevalent it is. Some of the truck guys have switched over to 10w-40 and claim it's gone away. I stick with the factory 5w-30, but have always used synthetic. I'm confident that wen I pull the valve covers this weekend to put on my roller-tip rockers that I'll see little to no wear or sludge underneath.

Piston slap is another matter, and that was problematic on earlier LS1 and vortec engines up through 2001. They started using new pistons with a teflon layer on the skirts after that to reduce the noise. It's also quite a bit louder and sounds more like a hammer tap on your engine block than a "tick tick tick tick tick". You'll know if you have it.

Not to say that it's completely gone, but it should be quite the exception today rather than a common problem.

Also, the TSB Bad Asphalt posted has never been mentioned to my knowledge over at the truck board. Strange since some of the members there seem to know of a lot of them.

Gm makes a pretty bad car now a days. I have turned to Chrysler for my other cars and Vans and most of these problems just don't happen in Mopar land. The Corvette and most of the Cadillacs are usually safe to buy at GM, All others are a crap shoot today. My Chrysler's are almost bullet proof. GM needs to clean up its act or it wont be around for long. The Gm units I have had have been oil eaters knock/tickers and riddled with computer glitches. I myself had a 2000 S10 Blazer buy back for a knock and oil leaking problems.

I think we should all be glad that GM didn't start requiring those "exotic" weight oils like Ford does - 0w-20??? My brother's Escape uses that weight oil and when he first bought it, there wasn't a store to be found that carried it. It's a little better now as I have seen it here and there.

Oh, and I should correct a mistake in my previous posting. I said the truck guys went to 10w-40, I meant to say 10w-30.

I have the Magnaflow too and love it, my brother got his used from craigslist but I wanted a valid warranty so I got it here. Magnaflow Exhaust 16515, or you can try one of the sponsors here on the forum, they are allways having sales/specials. Either way its a great exhaust system, sounds great, and very easy to install.

Hi Ray, I had missed your suggestion until I saw this post, then did a search. I guess I don't remember an additional post on why everyone bought their trucks so wouldn't know the term to use to find it.

Not sure right now if I will make it back to Penticton next summer..
