Navigation system / GPS

Hi,

what Navigation systems integrate easily into the SSR? I would also like to connect a hands free and IPOD to it.

Thanks for any info ;-)

cheers

Use the search button on the orange bar several inches below the top of your screen and type in "navigation". Many old threads will come up. I have just started researching this myself. 2 that I have seen posts on are the Kenwood DNX8120 and the Pioneer AVIC-F90BT.

Both seem nice, but do have their issues judging by feedback. I also noticed that Crutchfield is no longer carrying the Kenwood DNX8120. I'm not sure why. My little bit of research here today (while watcing it POUR down raining) seems to show the Kenwood as the better system, though you may hear differently as fanatics who have made these changes chime in.

Both systems have add ons to run with your steering wheel controls, ipod, back-up camera etc.

Google search will give you many reviews and many places to buy them at many different prices.

Hope this is of some help.

PUG

You might PM Sooner Blur. He had one installed (I don't know which brand) and it looks like it belongs there--can't tell it's an add-on. I believe it's also Bluetooth capable.

If you PM him, ask him to post reply on this thread, along with what year SSR he has (I don't know if there will be much difference from '03/'04 install as opposed to '05/'06 install) but would be good to know what kind in both cases.

ALSO ask if it is a touch screen!

Thanks,

PUG

My Navigation

I chose the Eclipse AVN6620. It is a pretty solid system that is cd driven. My setup allows me to play cds (any format) and dvds. I also have sat radio (SIRIUS), hd radio, ipod connection (in my glove box), rear-view camera (switches on automatically), and blue-tooth. The touch screen is 7" and has really good resolution. My steering wheel controls are functional as well as the warnings that come through the driver's side front speaker.

I used a higher end audio store for install, but bought all my components from Crutchfield and Ebay. Hope this helps.

Can you play music CD's while using the Nav??

Might seem like a stupid question, but I have heard others complain with the OEM nav that they can't play music while using the nav because the nav needs to have the dvd in it while using it. Also, how, or how easy is it to update the nav system maps?

Thanks,

PUG

play cds on nav unit

I guess it depends on the unit. My Pioneer AVIC will load the route, and then you can eject the map cd and play your music. However you can't stray far from your route while the map is out.

As far as upgrades, it seems they are expensive and slow to come out. But if you like downloading torrent files - they can be available. I see for my unit, that there is a 2009 map cd available. I currently have 2008 maps.

might be easier to carry a garmin to sit on the dash. My son uses one, and loves it - also a lot of files available for download for garmins (POI-FACTORY.com). He just downloaded into his garmin ALL of the red light cameras and speed cameras into his garmin pretty cool.

Regards,

I have a portable Tom Tom that I love, but I also love the "techie" in dash nav w/backup camera/bluetooth etc.

Love the tech toys....I'll have a hard time dealing with the nav disc having to be in for nav to work...this is a common thing I read about...maybe save a lot of $$ and just keep what I have. I'm gonna keep studying, and see what's out there.

Thanks for the info!

I have the Pioneer Avic. My SSR is a 2005.The wheel controls work as I purchased the other required components. I have to say I like the navigation, but overall the user interface is not that great in my opinion. It just seems like I have to push a lot of buttons (touch screen) to go from one mode to another or do much at allwith the audio, it fades out a lot as well on XM. Not sure I would do the Avic again. I really like my Garmin, it's is hard to beat for the price and I can move it from vehicle to vehicle. That'smy two cents! Oh yeah, there are no nav discs required with the new model. You can play CD's and run Nav, no problem.

I'll PM Bruce and let him know this conversation is going on. I also know he can play DVDs on his system--just what you need to do driving down the highway at 75+ mph

Nav System

I installed a Pioneer system. It looks like it was factory installed. All the steering wheel controls work. You can play cd,mp3s, sirrius ect. while it navigates. You can get options for an ipod, backup camera, real time traffic ect. I'm very happy with it.

Navigation system

I have done this twice. The first time a 2004 SSR. I replaced everything with the top of the line Alpine equipment. I purchased the unit with the 7" screen and removable navigation unit. I had Sirius, HD radio, bluetooth, CD that played MP3's and Ipod in the glove box. All steering wheel controls worked. Loved the sound, hated the navigation system (Bluebird). I traded the 2004 for a 2006 (both slingshot yellow, love this color). The second time they removed everything including the amp. While everything was apart the seats were removed and everything thing else then dynamat was used to cut down on the noise. They installed the Kenwood DNX9140 head unit, replaced the speakers in the doors. This was a lot different from the first time as we installed the same speakers behind the seat. The tweeters were placed in the original openings and new cutouts were used for the 6" speakers. The Air pump was removed and a custom made fiberglass unit was made to fit the contours and a 10" sub was placed in the enclosure. The seat goes all the way back without touching the enclosure. I'm 6'3" tall. I have bluetooth, Sirius, CD plays MP3's and 7" screen (Garmin)Steering wheel control. Crutchfield says they don't fit, they fit without any cutting of the dash. Love it. If you have questions post them and I will try to answer your questions.

Totally not a stupid question. Yes, I can play a cd while nav is running. It has two slots behind the screen. One is a dedicated slot for the nav. The maps are on the dvd, so you just have to buy the updated map from Crutchfield, Ebay, or an electronics store.

The updated maps can be expensive, but can be found for less than $80. They just add more points of interest (gas stations, stores, parks, etc...) to your disposal. I really like mine.

Bluetooth

What system works best with Bluetooth Hands free cellphones?

I installed the Panasonic GPS system with Bluetooth and while the GPS works great (no CD's to deal with).... it is very hard to hear and understand anyone when using the handsfree bluetooth.

They have discontinued the Panasonic system (wouldn't recommend it anyway and I spent big $$$ for it!) so am considering moving that system to our HHR and putting in a new system into BlueSSR.

Want to be sure I have the right one this time.

We put a Pioneer system into Smokey and it does work better than the Panasonic. I miss the stearing wheel controls on BlueSSR (Panasonic system didn't allow the steering wheel controls either).

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the info BigJank, I haven't checked out the Eclipse AVN6620, I have only look at the Pioneer and Kenwood offerings. I've heard of Eclipse but didn't think to check them out. I would not put up with not being able to play a cd and use nav at the same time. I like the dedicated slot for the Nav cd, that's good.

Cheers,

PUG

No problem at all. One more thing, Eclipse has discontinued the AVN6620, but has replaced it with the AVN726E ECLIPSE DVD-Video/USB Multi-Source Receiver/ 7inch Wide Screen Monitor/Navigation/ Built-in Bluetooth wireless technology AVN726E | Fujitsu Ten It is a pretty nice unit.
