Oil Change at 5K miles
OK I'm getting ready to put the R away for the winter months. Im over my normal 3K oil change because of all the miles I put on going to the Route 66 Rally in Arizona this month. So the question is, do I change the oil now or wait untill spring?
Nearly 80 degrees at the first part of the week and about 60 or so degrees on Friday.
Long sleeve shirts with jackets in the mornings and evenings.
I'm hoping for a little "Indian Summer" so I can wash and wax the bikes before putting them away.
I agree with the Fall vs Spring oil change.
I just had my SSR done but if we get a nice day before the snow falls I may have to take one final ride. Around here, we get snow (and salt) until mid-April so it's a long time before the SSR gets used again.

You know...that's really a tough call for those who can't take their R out at least once a month in the winter. I've been averaging about 5-7k a year since I moved to VA 6 years ago and change the oil once a year and that has been April or May. Our winters are no where near like yours so I'm able to drive it to work at least once every two or three weeks in the winter.
I would definitely do a oil change now before putting it up. I'm not sure I'd leave the "fresh" oil in for long in the spring. Even though synthetic oil does a much better job in battling the effects of condensation than dino oil, I would probably still change it out after bringing it up to temperature the first time out of storage...just my 2 cents.

I sure don't miss those long long long Michigan winters anymore. But I do miss everything else.
scott, after all of the years that you have had your SSR, you just now want to know wether to change your oil now or later ?? what did you do in your previous years ? maybe you better just bring it down to florida when you come down this winter. then you wont have to worry about it.

Of all previous suggestions, this one is highly recommended.

I recommend this for all northern fanatics (drive down or send), and I will take very good care of your R even change the oil (All colors of SSRs accepted )

the long and short story on this is 'never ever' put a vehicle into storage with anything other than fresh oil.
Acids accumulate in the oil during the combustion process and when left in contact with bearings during the period of storage those acids will etch the surface and so begins the process of early bearing failure.
The petroleum engineers will also tell you that even fresh oil will have some of it's additives oxidize away over time just from being exposed to the atmosphere once in the crankcase and they will also suggest you change oil again once removed from very long term storage.
On some of vehicles I use an off the rack 10W-30 and switch back to 0W-40 once brought out of long term storage. It doesn't matter on the quality of oil used for for storage, period, it just must be free off combustion related contaminants.

I can see the next question coming now . . .
Which is better for Non-Storage of SSRs . . . Florida or Texas?
