Maybe a stupid question from a relative new owner. How does the information center in the dash cluster know when the oil has been changed and resets the percent of time remaining until the next change message. Is there an actual sensor related to the oil drain plug or what? Thinking about doing my own oil changes and just curious.

I read somewhere (owners manual?) the cars computer monitors driving conditions, mileage and other factors to determine when to turn on your change oil light. It is not based solely on miles. Others already answered the reset question. Personally, I would change it at least annually if you don't drive it much. I also change it more frequently than the factory system tells me to if I exceed 5,000 miles per year, but it probably isn't necessary with the synthetic oil

What you said was 100% correct . . . but in my job I ask people for their keys 10-12 times a day so I can get the mileage (most vehicles, unlike GM, require the ignition on in order to light up the mileage) and I always say "may I borrow your keys to turn the ignition to "on" so I can get your mileage?" Most folks give me their keys, but for those that wish to do it themselves, virtually 100 out of 100 START THE ENGINE to get me the mileage.

Hi, The DIC method was no help for me. I tried it with the engine off and with it running. I tried it in park and in drive. I tried while in motion and parked, I tried it with the top up and down. I tried it holding the button on oil life and on the blank space after oil life. I tried the pedal down three times method and it worked the first time. The oil change light started flashing and then went off. Oil life went to 100%. Same as the wifes '98 Gran Prix. Thanks for the help.
