Re: Squealing Noise on Cold Start Up (Alt.?)

Hi Everyone,
I replaced the Water Pump Sunday, put on a new belt and new Stock Thermostat in, flushed the cooling system, put in fresh 50/50 Dexcool, added "Water Wetter" (which really does help!).
Problem is I still have is a nasty sounding Squeak/ Squeal that is definatly rotaional in nature that goes away in a about 2-4 minutes of warming up or driving. Mechanic friend says its my Alternator Bearing going. The Water pump diagnosis was that the Coolant was dripping from the upper radiator hose tube that is pressed into the Water Pump Housing.
Any other "Commom" suggestions, or best way to zero in on this particular noise, or confirm that it is the Alternator?

Thank you for any suggestions and help.
Best Regards,
Scott - USA-1-SS

Besides the alternator there is a tension pully that will sound the same way.

To narrow it down take a long screw driver (2-3') and set it against the alternator, and then the tension pully bolt. Set your ear on the end of the screw driver. This will act like an amplifier to the individual part. You'll be able to hear which part is bad.

Oh and this needs to be done while it's running, so be careful.

which ever bearing it proves to be the cure will run less than $10 as the bearings in the idler or alternator are very cheap at a bearing supply retailer. The one in the alternator will have to be 'hydraulicly' forced out by filling the cavity with grease and tapping in the rotor shaft using a block of wood and a hammer to push the bearing out 'from behind' with the force of the grease of the entrapped grease. The idler bearing can be accessed from the front to extract it. Just buy the best quality bearing you can get and you won't have this trouble again.

I would check the belt tensioner first.

I know some here have had a noisy power steering pump, when the engine is cold. It's located directly beneath the alt., so it's possible that's what you're hearing. There's also an idler pulley right next to the alt., which is also a possibility. Try Fuzzy's screw driver method and maybe you can isolate the culprit, before wasting time and money on something not needed. Good Luck!
