Rear Gear Oil and "Break In" ??

Some more questions for those of you with the knowledge.....

My new 4.10 rear gear getting put in on Thursday....

Suggestions on what gear oil is best?

Also "break in" ideas/mileage/advice after the install??

I was always taught that you run the new gears 500 miles or so of normal driving (but not WOT) and then drain the gear oil and replace with fresh to eliminate filings from wear in of gears, but some friends are telling me that is not neccessary. (you don't drain rear end oil in your new car after 500 miles).
I find that much of my knowledge is dated (you know you used to "break in" and engine) now none of that seems to matter.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!!

When i had mine done, the technician told me to take it easy for the first 500 miles, and everything should be fine. Although I didn't wait the full 500 before i tested the change. No issues at all, and I have not drained and refilled the rearend oil at all. It's not neccessary.
Just get them put it, get the tune completed, and have fun!

What gear oil did you use??

I'm thnking going full synthetic..Amsoil or Mobile 1....I guess I could use GM's oil as well. I can't say I know squat about gear oil...I use Mobile 1 in all my engines, before that I used only Amsoil until it became a pain in the a** to get the Amsoil.....

I have changed to Amsoil in engine, auto trans, and rear gears.

It is running slightly cooler, gas mileage increased, just a "Spec".

I will let you know after a put a few more miles on.

I have 4:10 gears, had them for 3yrs now. I like!

About to turn 54,000 miles.

Dicktator,

Did you use the "severe gear" or the 70-90 or the 70-140?

I may have the weights a little off, but I'm not sure what weight to use. Did you change the oil after the first 500 miles or just let it in and run??

I put in a less expensive gear oil initially and changed it out "as recommended" at probably less than 500 miles,
replacing it with Royal Purple.
No comment on gear oil quality but will say what I drained was clear and clean and a waste of time and money,
plus a certain amount of a PITA.
I expect the "recommendation" comes from gear oil manufacturers/suppliers.

ADD: I used 75-90. Unsure why but there was a reason at the time. As I recall the 140 was for severe conditions (cold?)

Hello pugpower - I've been using Redline Oil products in the motorcycles for years with no problems and good results. Take a look at their Shock Proof gear oils, they have some unique properties relating to viscosity and protection. I have had limited experience with Amsoil, I'm currently trying it in the Triumph - so far so good. Unfortunately, Redline seems harder to locate than Amsoil - out my way anyway, but it is available on line. Keep us (me) informed on the gear change, I hope to do the same to my 05 6 speed
as soon as possible.

Thanks

I used the 70/90 because I don't drive my R "Hard". My gear oil was changed about 300/500 miles after gear change and now I am changing again.

Do I have to change?? NO! It is just me looking for a "little" better.

Not even sure Amsoil is that much better than any other oil.

ALL the oils are better than ever, in my opinion.

Limited slip gear oil

Do our rear ends need any thing special like the old positraction limited slip required? I think those were a graphite based gear oil that prevented chatter in the lock up situation

The Royal Purple synthetic gear oil instructed not to add any limited slip additives.
It seems the type of gear oil used may be the determining factor in this.

Thanks for the info Bob. I'm going to make a decision on whether to get something special or just let them use the rear end oil they recommend (they are giving me a great deal of freedom to use whatever parts/oil I want. As long as it's good, that's all that matters.....

I'll let you know...dropping off Wednesday night for install, should have back by Thursday or Friday depending on when they can start on it. Unfortunately I'll be gone all day Saturday (car show in Ocean City, MD) so hopefully get some playtime Sunday...... I can't make it to Bryan until June 12th for the tune (I still haven't checked this date out with him....) so I am thinking about trying to get a Magnaflow cat back system shipped to the house before I go for the tune....I am wondering if the tune will be different with the Magnaflow (different backpressure). I am thinking it should be no different if you can just put it on a stock tune ...Anyhow, I will keep you posted on this topic and probably in a PM

I have five SSR's, and have replaced the gears in all of them, three times in Hellvis (4.10, 4.56, back to 4.10 with the blower).

Use the gear oil recommended in your owner's manual, and make sure whoever does the swap adds the recommended limited slip additive.

If you don't add the limited slip additive, the gears will howl, from personal experience.

The additive is a must for the 6 speed not the auto.

It made a difference in your auto trans SSRs? Is it called for in the manual? Just curious..
