Remove the bed lid ???

Are there ANY issues, leaks, problems when the rear lid is removed. I want to remove the lid and use the bed. Also would you post or link me up with some pictures of the SSR with the lid removed. Will this cause problems with the convertible roof operation. Also I am interested in buying the "surround" Yellow. I envision an El Camino look. Thanks.

No problems caused by removing the Bed Cover. Takes two men and a boy though.

Here are some pictures.

1. I removed Bed Cover and soundproofed the Bed area.
2. Up side and around hinges
3. Tail gate closed
4. Held wire harness with clothes pin.

If you are going to remove the cargo lid, you should consider using the wall hanging accessory that GM offered for the SSR. It consists of a very large slip-over heavy vinyl pouch that has velcro closure to completely cover the lid. There are 4 handles (2 on each side) that are designed for the two people to lift the lid off. There is a bar that goes across through the holes in the hinges so that you can hang the lid on the wall brackets. It provides a safe storage for a precious part.

I bought the excess inventory from the manufacturer of the cover in 2006 and fabricated the rest of the kit. I believe that I have the last 8 of these...... Here's a link to the item in my store.....

Mike

I'm loss ... why soundproof the Bed area? Are you doing something back there or what.

There is a Switch closure that has to be seen by the Body Module Computer.

That switch is near the Tail Gate. Otherwise you will get a warning on the DIC that the Lid is open. The Top will not operate until this switch is closed.

Thank you, we are getting there. So there is a switch that needs to be addressed? Please any further info! My bed has a plastic cover, Please where does it drain, no problems? I had a Miata hard top and made my own hanger that is no problem. I want to finish the look with the optional "surround", where can I buy one of these? I have tried to search, no results. Please may I see a picture and hear from someone who has actually done this transformation? It is not an everyday thing but sometimes I need a TRUCK.
Thanks Again.

Hey guys can we get back on track please?

Help, Thank You. I need to remove the bed cover. I want to know from those that have done this, what all do I need to do? Specifics, How do I delete the program so I CAN STILL DROP THE TOP? Is it safe in the rain? Where can I purchase the bed surround , Yellow?
May I please have direction. The last post got way off base. Yes I have tried search, now I am asking directly. May I have a straight answer, it seems we got out in the cornfields. Thank you.
I know how to remove the cover and store the cover. Who of you run without the bed cover and How do you do it? Straight Up. THX.

That's the rarest of the rare accessories. Finding one would be difficult and expensive. However, member ZZR has produced copies of the original that do the job just fine.

If you're gonna run with out the bed cover on, you need to at least close the latches at the rear. Once these are closed the circuit will allow you drop the top (just as if the lid were shut).

Question #1 - I want to know from those that have done this, what all do I need to do?
Answer #1 - Remove the cover by removing the two bolts that hold the hinges onto the side brackets.
Question #2 - How do I delete the program so I CAN STILL DROP THE TOP?
Answer #2 - There is no program to delete. The switch that is released when you remove the driver's side hinge from the side bracket tells the computer that the lid is not there.
Question #3 - Is it safe in the rain?
Answer #3 - The SSR is just as safe in the rain without the deck lid cover as it is with the deck lid cover. If you have a carpeted bed, however, you will run the risk of serious mildew under the carpet, since there are no drain holes in the front corners of the bed.
Question #4 - Where can I purchase the bed surround , Yellow?
Answer #4 - The bed surround, as a GM accessory, was discontinued in April of 2006 when they sold off the last inventory to get the books cleared. You may find a straggler of a kit by posting that you are willing to pay BIG bucks, but the chances are very, very slim. I think Bruce is right - contact ZZR to see if he will make you a set.

I think the hall effect sensor is on the right lid latch. I also believe that the switch on the driver's side hinge mount (answer #2) overrides the latched/unlatched hall effect sensor to the computer.

The cover removes in a couple minutes with the help of a friend. I suggest that you try it for yourself. Once you have done so and tested the top drop, please post your results. It will help others with the same questions.

Regards,

Mike

send a PM to OLBSSRD and ask him for some pictures. He's had his lid off and was running with a spare tire mounted vertically in the bed for a while. he should have photos.
