Question Replacement Tires for SSR

I have found a lot of old threads about replacement sizes and brands of tires for our SSR. However, most of them are no longer valid. I was going to put on the Firestone Wide Ovals but Firestone has just discontinued the stock sizes:

OE tire sizes:

255.45.19: Goodyear RS-A (about 28" tall x 10" wide)
295.40.20: Goodyear RS-A (about 29.3" tall x 11.6" wide)

Can you give me different options with the names of the brands and sizes that work with the stock rims (19x8 fronts/ 20x10 rears)?

My 2004 SSR only has about 4500 miles on it and the tires look great. However, they were made in 2003 (9th week) so they are 7 years old and I have read so much about that on this site.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Nitto INVO's are really nice. TommyB had them on his R at Laughlin and he did a lot of research so I bought a set. The sizes are: 255/40ZR 19 and 315/35ZR 20. Because you are on the right coast you could order them all for $1000.32 from 4 wheel in Tampa. They do not charge Tax or shipping. After I had mine on and several Las Vegas MOB members saw them they put them on. A fourth MOB member is considering them. They are quiet and ride great.

Thumbs up

I just got new tires put on my SSR. Bought at local Tires Plus, a Bridgestone dealer.
I went with Mike in AZ's recommendation and chose Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sports.
Fronts are 255/45R19 same as OEM.
Rears are 315/35R20.
Like Mike told me the rears are within 1/2 inch of the OEM tires and 2 inches wider than OEM. He has them on his SSR and told me there are no problems with the wider rear size. I just took My SSR out for a test drive and they feel very sticky and look "Bitchin"!!
I only had 6,000 mile on my originals, but they were over 7 years old.
Not worth risking our lives on the highway with old rotten tires.
I'm happy with the Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sports.

Unless you really need them before, Jerry, talk to me in Maggie.

Look at the General UHP's, 5mm oversize front and back, on the aspect ratio.

45's on the back, 50's on the front, with stock width.

Definitely no expert here, Carter . . .

However, The Doophus had GENERAL GRABBERS UHPs (255/50R19 and 295/45R20) installed in February at the local Discount Tire Shop and, so far, we're both very happy.

The Toyos are the only all-weather tires available for the SSR. If you drive a lot in bad weather like I do they're a must have. My truck no longer acts squirrely in the rain.

I was wondering about 335/35's, but can they squeeze onto the stock 10" wheels?

I actually prefer Sear Auto over Discount/American, but I have used both with good results.

Tire options

I put the General Grabbers on the rear and they are huge! At $330 installed for the pair, the price can't be beat. Fronts are about 50% more being a more limited 19" production run, I am told.

If you like to smoke your tires, consider the Falkens (even cheaper than the Grabbers) and in a 315 size. Burn em and replace em.

Money no object, I probably would have gone with the BG Goodrich KDWs for wet and dry performance, since we have no snow here in Florida.

Bud, I'm looking forward to seeing you again and to seeing your General Grabbers. I also like the ideal of the Nitto INVOs in 315/35/20 and 255/40/19. Does anyone have a photo showing 315/35/20 tires on the rear from behind (Bridgestones, Nitto, Michelin)?? Thanks, Jerry & Anna Carter

Here are pics of my 315/35/20 Bridgestones.
The pictures don't do them justice as they actually look wider in person.
They are 12 inches wide.
I really like them so far!

Just for curiosity I called our local Goodyear store yesterday. They quoted me $678.00 for the pair, out the door, to replace my rear's with OME Goodyears!

I really like the look of the Bridgestones 315ZR35-20 on the rear. I was checking with my local Discount Tire dealer and Bridgestone offers these sizes in Run Flat Tires. More expensive but not a lot. Would be nice since I don't have a spare tire. Has anyone used Run Flat Tires on their SSR? Would it ride rougher?

My Prowler had run flats on it and they rode like they were filled with cement.
The Prowler suspension is a lot harder than the SSR.
Run flats would be a good idea on the SSR if the ride is not to bad.
It would be nice not to have to worry about flat tires.

I recently bought an 05 blur with 3200 miles on it when I first got it I noticed a vibration that started about 55mph. The chevy dealer told me the tires had flat spots on the from setting so much, and they might get smoother as i drive it a few miles so after 1500 miles it did get better but at 65mph it would still vibrate and the tires are 6 yrs. old. So becouse we are going to Colo.springs I decided to replace them. I read your post on the Nitto's and decided to go with them. I found them at 4 Wheel for 1009 shipped. Armed with that price I went to discount tire, they beat the internet price by $15 per tire. But they went to 4 wheel's web site to see if the price was mounted and bal. and as you know it wasn't, so they charged me $60 to mount and bal. I live in Oklahoma so ofcourse they had to have them shipped out of Calif. ( and by the way it didnt matter who I bought tires from or what kind they were they were not in stock and had to be shipped. ) They didnt charge me for shipping. they got here in 5 days and Discount Tire's
service was first class. They told me they could get anykind of tire I wanted but they don't sell Firestone, when I ask why he said they would get them if you just have to get them but they try not to sell them he really was trying not to bad mouth them. Any way I got my Nitto' Invo's and I love them the difference is like night and day. I just wanted to thank you for pointing me in that direction.

Firestone has killed a lot of people, and almost killed me with their 500s.

Thanks for sharing the tire info. I'm a new SSRfanatics member and have to replace tires in the next month. This has helped me know which direction to go. Should have joined SSRfanatics 4 years ago.

I went with the General Grabber UHPs 275/45-19 fronts & 295/45-20 rears. They handle Great even in the rain, and they ride Smooth & Quiet. The best bang for my money! They look cool as heck too....

Tire Alternatives

The 295.40.20's are pricey. an alternative for the nonpurest is the Suburban 20 incher. A 275.45.20 is 1/2 inch narrower and 1/4 inch shorter and 1/2 the price. If these can handle a Suburban it can handle an SSR.

Not for everyone but another choice.

Tires

Put Continental Extreme Contact DWS On Have only driven about 100 miles on them, but the wife & I both think they are quieter and smoother than the RSA's. Besides, I like the Kick A-- look it has. We had a blow out on the Rt rear on the way home from Colorado. The Goodyear RSA for the rear could not be found, so bought a set of Falkens for the rear from Discount Tire in Colo. When we got home , went to the local Discount tire to shop for replacement tires. The only all season (match front and rear) available was the Conti.. Discount tire gave a full refund on the Falkins ( With 600 miles on them.) Plus a good deal on the Conti's. This was about the fourth time I have delt with Discount Tire and every time was a very satisfying experience.

Any more feedback on the Michelins? - that's the size combination I was thinking of.

I'm hoping you found them to be a lot smoother and quieter. They should deliver performance well beyond what an SSR would need.

What was the cost of 4 tires?

Hadn't seen the Invos before - wild looking tire. Another great alternative to the RSAs.
