Resonating sound from rear of SSR

Has anyone else ever experienced a resonating, droning type sound that comes from the back of their truck? I only notice it if I have the top up and am going between 50-60 mph. The sound just comes and goes and is annoying. I really am not sure how to go about isolating the source of the noise. I might be able to get a recording of it.

I get a drone with one window down. When I lower the other window the drone goes away.
I believe it's muffler noise. Nothing to worry about.

Drone

Do you know if you have the stock exhaust or what exhaust you do have? I went to the Flowmaster 40 muffler and it had a terrible drone, replaced it with a Turbo from Cherry Bomb and it was gone.

Big Daddy, you replaced the Flow master 40 because of the drone. The more noise the better, just put the windows or top down and let the good time roll.

Make sure you have the foam filters, in the vents from the top storage area to the just before the rear wheel wells.

If Dicktator is watching, he, as usual, has the answer. Not sure about specific details but partially caused by resonation in the top compartment that comes throgh 2 vents/spaces behind the drive & passenger seats. I stuff mine with a towel when on a road trip

Interesting, so I access the vents via the passenger compartment?

As far as my exhaust I am not sure if it is stock or not. I have been wanting to put it up on ramps and take a picture so you guys can tell me.

These are actually 'holes' not vents. If you put your seat backs forward you will see the odd shaped holes on either outboard side of the 'waterfall' (passenger & driver) where the top brackets go into the top compartment. This is what I plug with a towel with the top up. Just remember to remove the towels before lowering the top.
I run a loud Flowmaster 40 & this helps cut down but not eliminate resonation

Ok thanks I will take a look as well as taking a pic of my exhaust system to see what exactly is going on under there.

The holes/spaces/openings behind the seats are for the "flow-through" ventilation. Air will enter from the heater/AC vents, flow through the cabin, out the above mentioned holes, through the top storage compartment, and out the vents with the foam noise filters, I mentioned before.

Ok maybe my filters fell out. I will report back.

The foam noise reducers in the air outlet vents are for high frequency tire noise.

The exhaust resonance (drone) you speak of is a low frequency characteristic of the SSR at ~1600 rpm. ALL of our trucks have drone at 1600 rpm.... some worse than others.... depending on the level of exhaust and engine mods. It comes up through the floor of the vehicle, the bottom of the top compartment and the lower 8" of the rear panel of the top compartment.

Simple solution - - - avoid driving in the 1600 rpm range. That is about 55mph in an automatic. If you are stuck at that speed, select "3" instead of "D". If you have a six speed, you should avoid letting the engine rpms go that low..... select a lower gear.

Permanent solution - - - Line the top compartment with "boom mat" or some other type of low frequency blocking material. That will stop the ttransmission of the exhaust sound through the metal......

Regards,

Mike

Yeah, the noise is called Exhaust. It comes from most all internal combustion engines. The louder the better..

Now, that's funny. I get it, too.

Sorry, couldn't resist
