While at the dealership, I had the satin running boards removed from my 03 Black SSR, because the rubber had turned white. I understand that is a buildup that can be removed with Marine 303 or other products, but I actually think the truck looks better this way - more muscular and the eye is drawn to the fender lines.
The only downside now is that the frame rails are visible at the right distance from the vehicle and look shabby compared to the gloss of the paint. What are the alternatives to cover these rails and make them disappear? I suppose they could be painted.
In addition to the satin running boards, I have seen painted ones. Are these just the same boards painted somehow or a different part number?
How many different aftermarket running boards are there available and from whom?

Well you have just asked the million dollar question.I took my boards off too and want to cover my frame rail as well, I've painted my rails the same color as the "R" but that doesn't help the frame is just ugly. I've considered cutting the body mounts and lowering the body (channeling) over the frame, Or a set of lakepipes would do the trick. I've also thought about takeing the rubber off the running boards and filling that section in then repaint them body color and I already make modified brackets that lower and move them in so you won't scuff the paint. If maybe you want we can brainstorm a little and figure this cunundrum out.
And let's not forget the running boards like Fuzzy has those are real nice too, I forget who makes them maybe someone can help with that.

Just as a practical issue: I do strongly prefer the look of an SSR withOUT the running boards, but the boards do serve an important function: they greatly reduce paint pitting on the rear fenders due to road debris being picked up and shot back by the front tires.
Those who remove them might want to watch to see what happens over time. If the roads in your area are not veryclean, this could be a frustrating problem.

nerf bars
When Blue Thunder changed out his nerf bars for Eric's mpd molded running boards he put the nerfs on mine. I really like the look and it covers up the frame underneath and I no longer have to worry about keeping the black clean.
Don't think the guy that made these are making them anymore but it would be a good, inexpensive way to go.
Also added mudflaps on the front at Blue Thunder's urging to help stop the road rash on the back fenders.
Have some sheet metal rolled into a belly pan, like on old roadsters to hide the frame.
I was going to, but I was getting to much road rash on rear fenders with out the boards to protect them. So I put the boards back on after painting them body color.
If you take the boards off, be sure to have very low mud flaps on the front wheel well. (which kills the look also)

I drove without running boards for the first two years......the road conditions here in Michigan call for protection of the 's rear fenders. Mine won't be coming off anytime soon. I have many rock chips from the two years without them

I don't even notice the mudflaps anymore and I really thought I would hate them...they blend in to the tire color and since the R is dark, they really don't stand out.
I had the running boards taken off and painted the same black as my "R."
They look fantastic and almost disappear when looking at the vehicle. To go along with them I had the door handles painted black. I LOVE the way it looks.

Thanks Rod. We used those rockers on the TV show "How It's made" video clip. They have the set of Rockers in Quebec right now doing some more Beauty shots.
The models were started on Hot Rod Girls Vehicle and finished on another.
