This last week I took the SSR on a cruise from Fort Worth to Mpls, MN. After 900 miles I noticed the traffic was passing me like I was standing still. My Speedometer was sitting on 75 mph. I thought , boy did speed rules change in Minnesota !..
After about 30 minutes of watching the traffic fly past me. I took a look at my Garmin speed readout. It showed 55mph !! I decided to push the speed on the Speedometer up to about 90mph.. The Gps said 70... Finally the needle on the regular Speedometer dropped to 0 and stayed there.
Brought the SSR into a large MPLS dealership on tuesday and they said "No Problem" The cluster will have to be changed out. Left the SSR and came back on Weds afternoon. I found out the mechanic had worked on getting the dash off for almost 8hrs and could not figure out how to get it off. He had page after page of instructions, but said it did not even come close to the dash that was in the SSR.
I finally got on his computer and brought up the SSR site and did a search on DASH REMOVAL. Printed out the pictures and instructions and handed it to the Service manager. He went over to the SSR and in 15 minutes the dash was out .
It did not stop there.. 3 days later and 3 clusters in and out of the dash. I finally had a speedometer, but the DIC and Lights where all screwed up. I drove back to Fort Worth and brought it to my dealership here. It has been two days and 2 more clusters and it is still in the shop not working..
If you have a Speedometer go out, it would be a good Idea to print out the instructions for the mechanic, cause they have no clue on how to do it..
Well my speedometer was showing 140 + in a 65 mph zone. I came to a stop and she was showing 95 stopped. Dealer having trouble locating the cluster. The SSR has been at the dealer since 9/10

Seems like it is the same problem here. GM does not have "NEW" replacement clusters ( they had them built by outsource ) made in China.
They are having the units rebuilt in Chicago and it appears that this company has just gone under. The company used to program the cluster for the miliage and send a rebuilt back to the dealership.
Now the dealer has to find a source on their own to repair the unit, and the miliage on the odometer is done by a server at GM. From my understanding the cluster is bad to the bone, and if yours is still working it is only a matter of time and you will be replacing it. I will not trust the reading on the thing anymore myself !!!
Good luck on getting yours back also.
10 days to replace a Speedometer cluster is a Shame .. Again the parts situation with these SSR's is terrible.
I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer is trying to put an 03/04 Cluster in your 05
That is a good thought... could be the problem with some of the missing DIC readouts.
After reading the manual on outside RFI (Cell phones ect) I have it in the back of my mind that this could possibly be the problem with the cluster. I had my Cell phone in the coin tray and was on it constantly during the trip. ????
Or maybe the encoder that feeds the speedometer, although the milage did tally up on the readout from the DIC.
I also found out the shop replaced the ignition switch before even looking into the cluster, it was his first thought of the problem.

they replaced my 04 with an 05-06 cluster now i have an outside temp display on the dic, which of course i do not have the temp sensor for the outside temp. asked service manager to take it off the display, he told me that they cant delete it. so now it reads----F* hate looking at that

This is soooo weird, I have 30K on "Miss Daisy" with no (I mean NO problems) and this morning I noticed that at rest, it shows 20 MPH!!
As I've been driving it today, it has gone lower and lower and now it only show 5 MPH at rest. After hearing all of these war stories, I think I may wait and use my GPS as a speedometer for a while.

I don't which dealership you are using in Fort Worth, but they can either call or send the cluster to Autocraft Electronics in Carrolton and have it back the next day. I started acting up after Fredricksburg last year, the speedo showing 90 when I was driving 55 or 60, plus temp guage showing 260. By the way, the clusters are not made in China and GM just started letting the dealers program the milage about a month ago.

Well, It is Sat and after 5 days in the shop and a new cluster I drove her home today. Guess what, the lights for the shift indicator do not work. I am really discouraged that GM could not fix this problem after 4 clusters and numerous days of not having my truck ( 10 days total now).
I did notice that after the ignition key is pulled about 15 sec later I see a flash of yellow or orange leds light up and then go out. I wonder if this could be a 2006 cluster that has yellow leds for the shift indicator. I thought I read somewhere on the forum that the 2003 to 2005 have green indicators and the 2006 has orange lights . Could it be that the 2005 software has a different program and is not recognized by the 2006 cluster ??? I know that the 2006 has the OAT temp reading on the DIC.
Does anybody on the SSR forum have the knowledge to answer this for me ?
Was just at the dealership and finally got some answers to the Speedo problems.
It appears that GM made the decision to let the Dealerships program new replacement speedometers (Except for the SSR) . This one has to be programed by the factory and when the dealers hook up their system as they usually do to set the programs, on the SSR it wipes out the flash from the factory. They where really confused at why GM did not come up with a program that tells them that they cannot do this on the SSR.
Never the less , one more speedo installed and working .. The new one has the orange shift indicator lights ( not very nice looking ) but everything works as it should so far.
My Speedometer just started "chattering" around 30 MPH and "resonating" at around 80. Very annoying.
This started a few days after I had the Windscreen replaced.
It id not related to bumps etc., just dpeed.
I could not find any replacement instructions. I umderstand it is a simple task from some of the threads if done right and to keep the tabs.
Could anyone point me to these instructions. I don't want a long noisy ride to MV.
Thanks in advance

Additional Speedo Woes
My speedometer just started "chattering" & re-setting lower & higher than zero for no apparent reason. Has anyone come up with a fix besides replacing the cluster - perhaps the sending unit?
My speedometer died 1 day after 3/36 and I called GM and they said tough luck, even-though they are fixing other GM trucks with similar speedo problems. Not standing behind a defective product is a disgrace, IMHO.
