I need to use my 2005 SSR to actually haul some things. Of course they do not fit. Can the cover be removed to actually haul things? If so, how do I do that? And is it something that can be done easily and put back on when finished? Help Please!

In the owners book
vehicle's cargo cover can be removed. You will need more than one person to remove the cargo cover.
Open the tailgate. See Tailgate for instructions.
Disconnect the electrical connector located on the underside of the cargo cover near the front of the bed.
Locate and remove the bolts that hold the cargo cover in place. There is one bolt on each side near the front of the cargo area. Silver in color
Slide the cover rearward and then lift up on the passenger's side of the cargo cover. Then have another person lift the driver's side of the cargo cover.
Reverse Steps 1 through 4 to reinstall the cargo cover.

Linda...First welcome to the site from the Redneck Riviera of Florida. Since this is your first post others will welcome you on board as well.
It takes a couple people to lift off the cover but there is one bolt on either side you remove and lift the cover so the guide bolts follow the track when lifting upward. Make sure you disconnect the wiring for the light if you have the carpet option.
The cover is replaced in the opposite manner you removed it. That's it.
Good Luck.
P/P
Peace

HORRORS . . . hauling stuff in an SSR!
Thank Goodness DOOPHUS is napping right now . . . he'd be furious if he read such a ridiculous post!

Reading the owners book...well duh, I took all that "stuff" out of my SSR. Maybe I had better do some readin, and maybe I can actually fix the cover so it opens when it unlocks. I've had it into the dealer twice, and they say nothing is wrong. Well a black SSR in Texas in the Summer with a cover that won't lift burns your fingers. Carry a silacone pot holder with me to the grocery store...really.

Linda,
There is a technical service bulletin out there for this. Go to search at top and type bed cover and you should find it. Then take a copy to your service writer and they should replace your struts for free. If you have hard saddlebags as I do they can not make the change and you can do what I did and buy replacements from Mike in AZ. They work great even if you do have to get on the tailgate and jump on the top to get it down.

Thanks Mike it made all the difference in the world. Just don't have your chin above cover when you press the tab!!!!!
We removed ours for the first time this week. Got it off and back on OK, but would be easier if two stronger (i.e. younger) people were to do it. It's pretty well self explanatory if you look at the arrangement, and as was mentioned earlier, unplug the light first.

Great! I do have the hard saddle bags, so maybe my potholder will have to do for awhile longer. Thanks!

Somehow I missed that one! It has a roll bar as well. Would like to have seen how that was done.
And Linda B, Welcome from another of the SoCal Nuts. Where are you located?

Remove the SILVER bolt on either side, pull back and lift up. Follow the redline on the photo, it's easy. The hinges stay attached to the tonneau cover. Your hinges may look a little different, this one is the updated version.
Linda B, if your truck is still under its factory 3/36 warranty I highly recommend going this route Warranty Deck Lid Hinge And Strut Replacement.. This hinge/strut replacement done under warranty on my '06 pops the cargo cover up nicely and closing effort is perfect. I put the LST struts on my '03 (out of warranty by the time I acquired the truck) and like them too. IMO, either way you go you can't lose--of course the under warranty route won't cost you anything--free is nearly always better. Best of luck.

Linda,
When I first bought my SSR, I was doing a lot of hauling also. So I had all the inside body panels totally removed and had it all Rhino Lined. Everything I was carrying was scratching the heck out of the back. Looks and works great.
Hope this was a help. pics available if needed send me a pm.

Thank you everyone, for all your good tips and nice welcome. I'm thinking I like the idea of renting a ($19.99 Home Depot) truck. Sounds much easier. To answer my location, I'm in Collin County, Texas and occasionally see a couple of other SSRs around and about. Linda B
